Cheaper Deer Round Needed
« on: August 21, 2006, 10:30:05 AM »
I'm thinking about selling my Rem 700 BDL (6mm) for a less expensive round.  The 6mm's are tough to find and expensive.  In my current situation, I can't re-load.

I'd like a factory, cheap round, that I can practice with, and then hunt deer with in the fall.

Any ideas?

.308, .270, .30/06. The cheapest, if you can live with it, is the .30/30.

Or you could buy a bolt action in 7.62x39 and pay less than $4 a box for ammo. That or get to be a very good shot and be picky about shot placment and use a .223/5.56x45  also extra cheap.

Ditto what krochus said regarding the 7.62x39.

Thanks for the quick reponses.  I have a beautiful fiddleback CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39.  The problem is, most say I shouldn't shoot the wolf ammo in a gun like this.  That's got me worried about hurting my rifle.  Will it?

For deer, go 25-06.

Most are appearantly full of Bolgona ::) I fired this 100yd group with my CZ527 using wolf ammo. Why in the world world it matter what brand of 7.62x39 you shoot

Here is a test I did with the same gum using differing bullet diameters. BTW the bore on my rifle sluggs out to be .310

308 winchester

The 308 winchester is the best choice for deer and ammo is in every store. Every rifle manufacturer chambers it. Billions of military surplus rounds available. A heavy hitter compared to other cartridges.

1) Get a sporting goods store to order 100 grain CoreLokts for your 6mm...If they group well in your gun...order a case...Then you have plenty...

2)Since you are use to a 6mm...Get a .243...Then you have plenty of factory loaded options...

btw...Don't unload that 6mm too cheap...Guys that do reload usually love them...

Krochus - They said that the laquer would melt and foul-up the action.  Also, that the steel case would be harmful.  I don't remember how.

I bought the rifle 4 yrs. ago because it would be such an in-expensive centerfire to shoot.  I then bought some Wolf ammo and mentioned it on a message board.  The response was so overwelming, that to this day the rifle remains unfired.

I'm glad you've had good experiences with Wolf.

You sound like a pretty intelligent fellow. Just think about what I quoted above. If the laquer doesn't melt and foul up a full auto AK-47 why would it foul a bolt action one shot at a time? and unless you plan on firing 100K rounds Steel cases or even bullet jackets are no more harmfull than brass and copper. BUT you do want to make certian that you're buying commercal 7.62x39 (Wolf,Sapsan,Barnaul ect) and not corrosive military surplus from god knows where or when.

The most accurate x39 ammo I've found is the Wolf 154grn sp
The fastest is 123grn Barnaul in my CZ527 it chronies at just under 2600 fps

But by all means get that CZ and Wolf out and have some fun. Rifles are meant to be shot

Pecci -

You didn't say what kinds of conditions you would be hunting in.  Close range or far, wooded or open.

The cheapest that I think would meet any and all of these conditions for deer would be a .308 WIN.

I have to agree with Cheesehead that there are millions of surplus rounds available for practice and also some of the finest factory loads sold.
Just my 2 cents

I understand .....cheap but there are times when you have to pay to play
30-06.   Cheap( a relative term) and can be found any place.

The .30-06 165 PSP Core-Lokt is my favorite round and is 16.99 on Cabela's website. Inexpensive enough to practice and hunt with. Cheap compared to all the other costs of hunting.

I hunt on my friends property, both woods and pasture.  Shots are any where inside of 150yrds.  So to my knowedge, the 7.62x39 would suffice.

Where do you guys find the .308 military surplus ammo (on-line)?

I definitely vote for the 308. Lots of surplus ammo for practice, as well as excellent premium ammo that makes it just as effective as a 30-06 for deer sized game. It is a very capable long range cartidge too. The 7.62x39 is much more limited in range. For closer range though a 7.62x39 or 30-30 would be excellent and cheap to shoot.

Good shooting,
Brian

.308 Win is also know in military jargon as a 7.62mm X 51

Mail order or on-line catalogs are a possibility.  Try these two for starters but there may be more than these to offer prices  http://www.sportsmansguide.com/  or http://www.midwayusa.com/

Normally I pick it up at a gun show or when one of my local gun shops gets alot of it in bulk.  Stacks of it next to the counter.  At a gun show you can't pass a vendor table without a pile of boxes stacked up.  I advise to stay away from any that may be corrosive to barrels.  Ask the guy selling if it is corrosive and he should know.  If he says he doesn't then pass on that and find another vendor that either does know or the box is so labeled.  Your local gun store can advise you on what he has to offer.

Don't forget to shop as often as you feel possible at your local store as this keeps him in business.  When the little shops start to disappear then we all loose out.  The MARTS and DEPOTs may have some big ads, bright lights to dazzle you, and SOME nice prices but when asked a question I normally get a blank stare and a "I dunno.." as an answer from some young kid behind the counter.  When the little guy is gone and the big corporations decide not to carry your guns or ammo for P.C. reasons... where you gonna be then?

Good point. I try to go out of my way to shop at the smaller gun stores where the owner and employees are actual gun owners and know what they are talking about. The is a vast ammount of knowledge to be gained as well as supporting people who truely support our rights. I still buy from the big chains, but is is usually when I am in a pinch and need something fast.

Good shooting,
Brian

Then neither is 30-30 ::) Contrary to popular belief WOLF 7.62x39 will launch a 154g spitzer at the same velocity 30-30 will launch a 150grn pill from a 20" barrel. IN fact the trajectory wolf 150grn load is almost IDENTICAL to Hornadys 160grn Leverrevolution 30-30 load again in a 20" barrel

Then there's the lighter bullets. In what way is a 123grn SP or HP moving along at 2450 FPS not adequate for deer.

I don't think the 7.62x39 is a good deer cartridge, but it is similiar to a 30-30 in ballistics, so with the right bullets it is plenty adequate for deer at 100yrds or less.
That said, if you are purposely buying another gun for deer that you can practice with military ammo, why not get a 308(7.62x51 NATO). It is powerful accurate and cheap to shoot when using surplus ammo.

Good shooting,
Brian

I haven't found the surplus ammo that comes close to the Wolf ammo, in price.  By the way, they have more than doubled in price and tripled in lack of availability.

Really! With all of the strife going on in the world finding good deals on 7.62x51 NATO surplus would be like finding great deals on 450/577 Martini ammo.

.30-30 is good deer load. .30-30 got fairy heavy bullet, 150 and 170.. Ideal deer bullet weight should be at least 140 grains. 100 grains with high volocity like 2,900 is good for deer too. If bullet weight is kinda low with highest volocity is good like .243.. Since 7.62x39 got both at low which isnt for deer load.

LOL now that's funny What gun magazine did you read that in?

With your reasoning you've just wiped out a multitude of great deer rounds
.357mag , 45LC , again 30-30 , 300 sav , any handgun, 30 rem , 351WSL (considered an exellent round in it'd day) 32-20 , 32-40 , .303 brit , domestically loaded 8x57 the new 6.8spc, 25-35 any of the smaller 6.5 calibers, 30 carbine , .223, 30-40 , 44-40  ECT ECT

Believe it or not it doesn't take an RPG 7 to kill a little soft fuzzy 180lb whitetail.

Once you makes a bad shot at deer with light weight bullet with low volocity bad shot at 180 lbs deer, it might would took him 2 days to die. But it actually still kill a deer, but need to use right bullet to make a good kill.

You can use a 458 win mag and still have the same result ??? BUT at $4 a box you can actually PRACTICE enough to become a better marksman instead of gut shooting game and relying on high velocity and bullet mass to disable the animal :o

Krochus, i agree with you. But in my state, when gun deer season is open, most deers are on run, all i have to make a quick shot and kill. I rather safe than sorry. I know we got different opinions, i can't blame that.  :)

This is one of the silliest threads I have read in a long time.
#1 The guy already has a 7.62x39.
#2 Krochus....Do you EVER read the posts on GBO about Wolf ammo?  The Wolf ammo DOES cycle in most semi's because it dosen't have  .25 of a second to harden in the chamber like it used to do in Contenders and NEF's single shots.  This is COMMON KNOWLEDGE on this forum.
#3 Wolf, to the best of my knowledge has stopped using the red sealant at the base of the bullets that was the biggest sorce of gluing into single-shot rifles.
#4a  7.62x 39 is not good for deer outside of 100 yds...(this one really gets me)
#4b  first off....I don't even KNOW of ANYONE around these parts that has ever needed to shoot a deer outside of 50 yds...less yet 100.  For Pete's sake....I have had to throw things at deer to get them to leave me alone.
#4c....I beleive the effective range for this round would be more like 200 yds for a rifle that is sighted in for that distance for any decent hunter with a scoped rifle.
#5...Are there better cartridges for taking deer?  Of couse!  But I would not hesitate for a moment to take a deer with this cartridge.
#6.   Guess what I took a nice deer with last year.  However....I DID have a very hard time tracking the blood trail for the approximately 10 feet that the deer ran after being shot.
#7  Why is most everyone here acting like DEER are so hard to put down?  Are you guys really THAT bad of a shot?
I really do not want to insult anyone here, but why does it all sound so impossible to shoot a Stupid deer?  Next, I will probably be reading about how Turkeys are the smartest animal in the forest, and that it probably isn't even worth trying without special training!
....make it count
