fishing self defense
« on: August 21, 2006, 11:33:27 AM »
i am looking for something to use for self defense when i go fishing. I can't use a gun or pepper spray but, i have been useing small axe, machete, slingshot, and a knife(7''long). so i am looking for something to carry for dog size, people size attackers and cuting back brush. would a ninja sword(35'' long),short sword(18'' long), or a baton be better for this? i have use a ninja sword in the past to fight off a pit bull(killed it) and have use a baton on someone to.

My first thought is that you need to fish somewhere else! A 35" sword should get you arrested most anywhere! If I couldn't carry a gun, a 5' hardwood staff would be my choice. You're on your own when it comes to cutting brush, but a small battery powered saw might work.
Good fishing!

Most states have a legal length on what is a knife and what is considered a weapon.  A sword is going to be a weapon anywhere I know of.

If it were me I would move to Alaska.

A 7.5 foot heavy action musky rod with a 12" Suick jerk bait equipped with three sets of sharp treble hooks could be a fearsome weapon.

In my opinion (just that), a sword type weapon is not your best choice.  For brush work you might prefer a heavy laded machete but for fending off predators or attacking dogs the 5' long staff would be a better choice - especially if the end was threaded for an attachable spear point if you are facing a more aggressive larger animal.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Check your local laws before carrying the baton, they too are illegal in some states. The Bo Staff seems the better option to me.

Why can you not use a gun or pepper spray? Are you fishing in a National Park?

Considering all of the weapons you have, I believe I'll steer clear of your fishing spot!

I carry a walking staff.
I made it from a push broom handle.
on each end I fitted a 5 inch section of Steel Pipe
(To keep the wood from being damaged when it
hits the ground while walking) The ID of the pipe
should be just a bit smaller that the OD of the handle
Then drive it on with a block of wood to make a tight fit.
(wood don't damage the pipe)  Drill a small hole and pit in a
screw to make sure it don't come off This makes a good walking
stick and should repell most things you encounter

Seems like SS has a viable solution.
Fishermen usually have enough stuff hanging about their persons, so that another long thing to carry is really a bother, but a waking staff is low profile, and the way SS describes it, would be an effective weapon. One addition might be a sharpened 2" or so nail in one end, for longer reach.  As back-up, depending upon local laws, a fillet knife with a smaller blade, which nobody in fishing country gets upset about.  Carried openly, it might even be a deterrent.

An alternate staff , a bit lighter would be a ski pole. Garage/yard sales are a good source of these.  They already have sharp,  hardened tips, and make great wading /walking/photo staffs.   Remove the basket, and thread a bit of stretch cord thru a hole, and you can carry it slung over your shoulder, like the landing net.

Of course, if they haven's been trained, most people who think they will use a walking staff for defense flail about like they were killing snakes.  Learn some cane fighting basics, and use them. They are simple, and increase the effectiveness of a staff-type weapon.

Peter H. Capstick once (tongue in cheek) recommended the African assegai. (short stabbing spear)  Buuuut... other than Cold Steel, where do you buy one, and more importantly, HOW do you pronounce it? :D

I'd go with some kind of staff.  If you go around hacking brush on someone else's or state property, you could find yourself in really big trouble.

A friend carries a small pistol as a deterrent.  On one occasion he had two rough-looking guys size up the area to make sure there was no one else around, and then approached him.  They stopped short when they saw the pistol and left.  On another occasion he was shot at while ice fishing by a wacko who wasn't taking his medicine (cop's explanation of the the guy's actions).  The pistol didn't do much good, but a cell phone did.

I had one incident.  I had just left my car when a truck drove by and the passenger threw a beer bottle at me.  It missed.  I went back to the car for a pistol, which I carried for the rest of the afternoon in case they came back.

Get a shovel handle, drill a hole in the end and glue/nail in a piece of re bar, sharpen the end of the re bar just a bit. Now you have a walking/hiking stick with punch. Makes a good dog sticker too. (Not my idea. I read it in Backwoods Home Mag.)

Ah yes, the old "rebar in the handle trick".  I like it!  That should work a lot better than just a nail.  How long should it be?  I would think a 6" long piece of 1/2" rebar sticking out about 1" should do it.

I always carry a sawed off kid's baseball bat (wood or aluminum) and wrap the handle in paracord. I use it to pound tent stakes, tenderize meat, and kill fish that I intend to eat. I has also served me well to ward off a feral dog. I did not kill it, but gave his noggin a whomp, he won't soon forget. I tied on a wrist loop.

If I am not fishing in a park, I just carry my Glock, waterproof, reliable, etc. Not sure if that fits your bill.

Skit has the right idea, but use a revolver--it doesn't leave any brass around. One of those small north american .22's would be better than a walking stick.

Halibut, no kidding.  Try to boat a barn door without dispatching it first.  Then there's always bangsticks for shark, too.

As for the poster's original question, I'd go with a walking stick and a good, fast working folding knife, as far as any law enforcement personnel would know....

This man has the right idea.

To hell with the law, I will not be caught holding a pocket knife or a walking stick while staring down the barrel of a gun.  I live in meth country.  Meth heads will kill you for the change in your pocket and not remember it 10 minutes later.

Three times now I've run into strange characters who looked as if they were sizing me up and deciding if it would be worth going through me to get at my female companion.  All three times, the potential bad guy noticed a pistol on my hip and changed direction.  These encounters all happened in rural areas where 911 wouldn't have been an option.  Luckily it was in areas where open carry is legal.  If I were in an area where firearms could not be worn openly, I would still carry concealed, regardless of the law.  I value my own safety above laws written by people who live in the safety of gated communities with manicured lawns and regular police patrols.

That is three times more than I have been checked by any law officer.  (none, for any math geniuses out there)
