30-30 factory ammo
« on: April 09, 2003, 02:55:34 AM »
I should be receiving my 30-30 barrel today from Ed's.  A local gunsmith will be cutting it down for me to a 12" barrel.  I plan on using standard Remmington ammo for practice but what have others found preferable for hunting deer and black bear.  (I realize they may be different).  I was leaning towards Winchester Supreme with Power Point Plus bullets.  All information/experiences are greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's going to matter too much what bullet you use.  At the velocities your going to get out of a 12" barrel they are all going to act pretty much the same.  Use whatever shoots the best for you.

I don't shoot factory stuff in my 30-30 anymore, but when I did I found that any variety of 150gr shot better than the 170's out of my T/C.  I used PMC a lot since it was typically cheaper and it shot great (approx 1" groups at 100yds with open sights).  I also shot a bunch of Winchester's, but don't think they were from their Supreme line.  Now for bear, I might be more inclined to use the 170's to ensure that I get good penetration.  The 150's will work just fine for deer.

Good luck ... Crayfish
