445 super mag
« on: August 22, 2006, 06:26:20 AM »
I know some on here have done this conversion,  Im considering it now

Is it a worthy project?  where can I obtain a reamer?  can the conversion be done by hand as I did for my 357max?

Are there loads/bullets that can take advantage of the 22" single shot rifle barrel?  Do basic 44mag reloading dies still work for the longer case?  How about brass availability?

Just somr starting questions  ;D

44 mag dies will work and brass can be obtained from Midway starline is the only company that makes it. I dont know how hard it is to do as i don't trust myself to do it.

The 44 Mag reamed to 44Sup. Mag is a hand job just like #57 Maxie.
My 219Zipprt was done hy hand, It had a lot more metal to remove.
No problems Take it slow and use cutting oil! Marv.

You can rent a reamer for less than $50, I've dealt with 4D, the transaction went like clock work, but DRinks had a bit of a hassle with his .445SM rental from them in waiting for it to be returned from another customer, then he had to ship it to someone else, or something of that nature, IIRC.

I hav'nt seen anyone complain about the 445 supermag conversion yet. There must be at least 15 of them by now and they're all happy about it. The 445 seems to get alot of use in the Handi rifles, from deer to elk and bear. Its very close to a 444 Marlin velocity wise. The bad part is that the Handi barrels chamber is about .006 oversized and the brass will swell down to the web,but it does not see to hurt the brass any. Most of us are using the 265 gr. Hornady and 31 grs.or more of Win. 296 for 2146 fps. The 300 gr. Hornady XTP will clock around 1975 fps. in most of the guy's chrono's.  Its very deadly on wild hogs and deer.  Digger

I own two Handi Rifles and one of them is a rechambered 44mag .I got the reamer from a member on another forum for $15.00 and return shipping. The rechambering of a 44mag barrel to the 445 supermag is a no brainer and the reamer cleans up the looong NEF throat that comes on their 44mag barrel.

I think you would be very happy doing this. You will gain alot from this rechamber too.The 445sm brass will run you about $36.00 a hundred and can be had from Midway and others.

240 and 300gr XTPs shoot very good for me and i also have a custom bullet mold that cast bullets alittle bigger than the bore measurement. These cast bullets also shoot good for me.

The 445sm is a real sweet heart to shoot too.Very little recoil from a rifle and the hitting power is right up there. Its not as much as my 45-70 but the deer will never know the differance.

One more thing I like about the rimmed case of the 445 and the 45-70.No stuck cases in the chamber like you get with the bottle neck cases in these guns.

GO FOR IT

If you have a small lathe, cases can be made from .30-40 or .303 Brit. cases, so don't worry about starline dropping production.
I ordered some from Starline and when they came, I checked the dimensions and it is the same as the full length brass shotshell cases I have been making for .44 mag.
