What's a good bullet for coyote hunting with a 223 Rem.?
« on: August 22, 2006, 06:30:02 AM »
I have a Remington model 700 BDL 223 Rem. It has a 24 inch barrel with the 1 in 12 twist. I use factory ammo. I've been using Remington's 50 gr. AccuTip bullet pretty much for crows and target shooting. I haven't hunted coyote before, this will be my first year! I was wondering if these bullets will work on coyotes out to 200 yards or so.

I was also thinking of trying some 55 gr. bullets like Remington's AccuTip V,  Winchester's Supreme Ballistic Silvertip or Federal's PREMIUM V-SHOK  Nosler Ballistic Tip. How heavy of a bullet will the 1 in 12 twist stabilize? Can I go heavier then 55 gr.?

I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks NYH!  :)

You will have good luck with the 50 to 55 gr.bullets out to 200yds and if conditions are rite on out to whatever. I have had good luck with this same set up for a good many years. If your barrel was 1in10 or 1in8 you could go with a heavier load but you will do fine with the 50to55 grainers. Good luck sir............Joe.......

there might be another bullet you might consider trying..and that would be the Barnes triple shock 53gr bullet..it is like the hammer of Thor on em at all ranges.and I like it for it's non exsplosive properties.and since I am calling predators.some thing larger then a filthy coyote may come to the call.and I would want better penatration, and would have it with them. But in any case.as oso said you are good to go.

Buy a box of Rems and a box of Federals and a box of Winchesters.  In 55grs.  See which one your rifle shoots the best. Then buy several boxes of those.  Try to get them all with the same lot number.
You need to kick that using store bought ammo habit if you can.  ;D

Best kept secret is the white box .223's at Wallmart, 45gr HP with a crimp type nose, most rifles shoot them very well and they are more than enough for a Coyote.  Most serious fur hunters use 25gr Bergers out of a 17 Remington, I use the 30gr Berger HPBT, so even the 45gr bullets are heavier than you need.  The heavy bullets will make one big hole and one little hole, when all you need is the one little hole.  Larry
