The Wizard of cut rifling that is... ;D

I got my 25-06 Ultra off to Wayne York of Oregunsmithing...Can't wait to get back my custom  26" 270 Winchester"Ultra"...and a few other refinements I'm having done to it....Now the wait begins...all over again...

Thats great news Mac. I hope he gets to it as soon as he can, and you be hopefully hunting with it this season. With such a long tube you should be able to get the most out of the 270, thats for sure.
 The 270 and 30-06 would do well if they were offered by more in this config.. But anyway you should be able to surpass the velocities that many manuels have down. It's funny like with Speer for example, that they admit a person won't be able to get published velocities from the factory, because they use a longer test barrel. And then they themselves test out their loads in a shorter one ???  ;D
Oh well, my best to you my friend. As it will be a hard one to wait for 8)

Congrats!  Tough to beat a good 270.

Aaron, an interesting note, I have been getting exactly published velocities from the Hodgdon manual in my 22" 270 and they were using a 24" tube.  Just an interesting observation.

Well Mac,

The .270 is a great caliber and I bet she will be a nice shooter to. I hope she comes back soon and I look forward to a report.

 Hope you don't have to wait as long as I did back when I sent him my barrel.
 Seem like 6 years to get it instead 6 mos. But he made his move during that time.

Makes you wonder after a nice cut rifleing job on a 26" and a thorough polish -which we all know Mac is well know for ::) ;D- , what he should be able to get out of it...
I don't doubt it will be one sweet package.

Let's see now, 140Gr. Accubond with a BC of .456 or a 150Gr. BST with a BC of .496 or a Swift,

Sure I know those 2 words.............I just don't use them very often :D :D :D :D

This has been a project I have wanted to get underway for such a long time...I thought I had it earlier this year...but...some conieving thief made off with my original "Birthday" present... >:( >:( >:(...But...Wayne should have the whole thing by 10:30am PST today...8-23-06...since I Fed Ex'd it next morning air ...and insured it for enough that if this one turns up MIA...then I can buy a #1 Ruger in stainless ;)

Arron...I'm hoping for the best with this barrel...and if it produces what my 26" Winchester Westerner did safely...then it will be just perfect...That is one rifle I wish never got away..but..you all know how that goes... I will be hand lapping it,just as Quick & I did on our 338-06A-Squares Wayne built for us...It will be on a dedicated frame this time around...and that's something I also have been wanting for sometime...This way I won't be messing around with any o-rings...and RTV bed it straight off..

Marv...I don't think it is going to take that long...and I hope to have it back in time to work up some good handloads to take along with me on my upcoming bear/deer hunt with nomosendaro this November...I've got so-many different bullets for it it's crazy...even got a pre-production box of Hornady's 140 SPBT from many years ago...those shot exceeding well from my Westerner...and might do well from this one...we'll see...

I think you guys are going to like how it looks...I know I'm pumped about it....and  I can hardly wait to get it back...

John...you can be sure I'll be posting pics..of everything...and letting everyone know how it does...

Matt..Sounds like you got a very good barrel there....A-lot of the newer published data has downgraded the 270 Win...all because of the short mags I'm guessing...and a good 26" tube in the 270 has the capability of much,much more than what most books say it can do...and for that matter...in a 30-06 as well...For an interesting read...pick up a back issue to Handloader...issue #222 April 2003...and check out what John Barness wrote starting on page #18 with his 26" shaw barrel...What he was getting with his...I was getting with mine...and what I am hoping for with this one...
