Another toy
« on: August 22, 2006, 10:51:54 AM »
Sorry, no pics (my digital camera is on the fritz).  I ran across a dirty but sound 336 in .35 Remington yesterday.  The gun was topped with a slightly worn (and frankly, foggy) old Weaver K3 with the post reticle.  When I looked at the bore, it looked sound with just a bit of wear at the muzzle.  (Can someone tell me why people clean 336's from the muzzle!!! ugh!)  After getting my treasure home this afternoon, I was pleased to see that the barrel cleaned up revealing a bright bore.  The bluing is in very good shape with just a bit of "dulling" on the bottom of the lever and the receiver.  The scope lenses also cleaned up nicely revealing a clear, bright image.  And the mounts are the old Weaver tip offs-still tight as can be.  I'm anxious to pick up a box of ammo the next time I get to Wally World.

In the meantime, can anyone help me with date of manufacture.  I know I've seen a link to a site that matches serial numbers to manufacture dates.  The serial# on this carbine is V31XXX.  It has the cheesy gold colored trigger and it appears to have had white spacers at the buttplate and pistol grip cap at one time.  The gun is stocked in black walnut.  Oh yeah, price?  Well, no steal but I think a fair price at $260 out the door.

FYI, My local Walmarts (SE AL) have cleared out the 35 Remington. As in no longer stock it.  I did get two boxes for a total of $13, wish they had more.

You might hurry up and check walmart out, it stinks.

Peter Cartwright:

Your Marlin 336 with a serial #of V31XXX looks to have been manufactured in
    in 1961 (Aug) 1962.

Thanks for the date of manufacture information and the "heads up" about Wally World!

Found a box of Remington 200 gr. ammo (actually a whole stack of boxes!) at our local, small town sporting goods store.  Guess the presence of that .35 Rem. stuff bears witness to how popular it is for hunting the thick stuff here in Michigan's U.P.  I removed the scope, cleaned up the mounts and the top of the receiver, squared the scope in its mounts, tightened everything down hard and headed to the range.  The first three shots fell into a verical group of a bit less than an inch ( at 50 yards).  My hunch is that the vertical stringing is more due to my learning curve with the post reticle than with any problems with the crown. (There is some wear at the muzzle end).  One set of adjustments on the windage and elevation and the rifle printed where it pointed.  Looks to me like it's a very practical tool for putting venison in the freezer.
