I'm Loading some Remington 405gr Jacketed flat points over some IMR- 4320 at 1720 FPS for my H&R ultra hunter 45/70 Gov't w/22" barrel would this make a good whitetail deer load?

I only shoot Jacketed bullets a pretty high velocity, If I'm paying about .17 per slug I want all I can get out of them.  ;D
But I shoot them out of a Ruger #1 that is fairly light. So the recoil is very noticeable, In fact I only shoot the high velocity loads when I have a cold!!! They will knock the snot right out of ya!!!  :P  99% or my 45/70 shooting is with cast bullets at about 1500fps....and these will do anything you really need.

well i think i got the recoil tamed for now with the extra weight in the stock i think it weighs a little over 9 pounds now so the 405's shouldn't hurt me shoulder ;D

This is a nice bullet for deer. But IMHO best kept below 1500FPS. It tends to overexpand. Its too lightly constructed for my taste. I have had them come apart on bones and this results in poor penetration.

If this kind of velocity is your preferance, try SPEER 400SP. I have shot these to 2000fps with excellent results.

I shoot the Rem's 405's in my Handi loads at just about 1500FPS. Excellent results. Nice exit holes thru ribs as well as major bones. Always thru and thru penetration at this vel level. Push it up even a bit and it sheds weight FAST.

I shoot the SPEERS in my Marlin 1895/Ruger #1 at just under 2000FPS also with excellent results. I shot right thru a 225# Sow bear with this load. Bullet entered on her left shoulder, devestating the joint traveled thru three more feet of bear before breaking the hip and exiting.

405-gr flat point, 1720 fps.  yes...it will humanely take any whitetail, boar or black bear at any range you can confidently shoot it.  my pet load is 300gr flat point at 1800 fps and it has been incredible on all three.
put em where you want em
