Black bear with my 300 RUM
« on: August 23, 2006, 07:30:55 AM »
I got my bear with those nosler partitions 200gr going 3015 fps. One shot and he was dead.
He only weighted 100 lbs.
Got him up in Canada.
I was suprized that the bullet opened up going thru the bear. My taxerdermist said small hole going in  bigger hole coming out.

Mine was with a 7mm Rem mag, 175 grain corelokts.  At 300 yards, the exit wound was about 2 inches, the entrance wound about 1.5.  I have switched to 160's in my 7 mag.

A 200g Partition doing over 3000fps vs. a 100-pound bear?  I can just hear all the people screaming "overkill"!

Well, ignore the voices and congrats on the bear!

Don't you know you can't kill a bear with a .300 Rum?  You must have something .375 or bigger! :o

I don't think it is over kill by no means, but I would use a shorter range rifle with a bigger but slower bullet.  With hunting over bait, I think a long range rifle such as the 300 Rum is to explosive when the bullet hits at close range under 30 yards that is.

But congrats on your bear there jro45.

SNIPERVLS,  What power scope is that on your rifle? I have a Burris 4X16 on my 300 RUM and can shoot out to 600 yds.

Its a Super Sniper 10x Fixed(model # is SS10x42). They are making Variable models and in the process of getting them to market so I may put a Variable on the VLS for hunting purposes(same goes for the .300wm Police) but plan on getting a higher powered model onto the Sendero .300rum so I can see a tad further. A 4-16x like your Burris would be ideal and is what Im hoping for from SuperSniper :)

Im not saying 10x isnt good enough, it is. People use 10x for past 1,000 so its very doable as Im sure you know. But when I am going for small critters such as groundhogs past 600 yards, 16x or 20x makes it so I can better see the little fellas faces b4 they meet my little friend named Scirroco :) Past 20x and the shaking scope picture is more of a distraction to me and not worth it.

**Huge Super Sniper fan. They stack up to tactical scopes from other companies that cost 3 times as much. Im one of those that fall into the category of "If its made for military/tactical purposes, its a killer scope for hunting". Like I said above, I wish the Variables would come out as it would be helpful if say Im deer hunting and need to get on a moving target fast. A 10x fixed isnt so hot for such a predicament :(

Sorry for the rant!
