Single Six .32 H&R
« on: August 23, 2006, 11:05:14 AM »
Have a chance to buy one new for $260.  How easy is it to get ammo?  Expensive?  Can the .32 S&W be used in this gun also?

Now that Black Hills is making cowboy ammo for it the ammo situation isn't too bad. It does work great as a handloaded round though, in the Ruger you can load it to very mild or to a serious amount of power. .32 S&W does work, though not terribly accurate in my gun.

32 S&W longs are not very accurate in mine either, but the 32 H&R loads are very accurate.  I handload and it is a great cartridge.  My Ruger is an older one with a 4 5/8ths bbl.  this makes for an easy packing gun.  If I ever find anymore with the adjustible sights I'll buy the.

I've got to put my 2 cts in here.  I have a 6 1/2 bbl .32 that Ken Kelly at Mag-na-port made into a 'Mini-Stalker' for me.  I have never tried .32 s&w in my gun but with .32 Mag ammo it is a tack driver!  I have a 25 yd target that contains 12 rounds that you can cover with a nickle!  I fired that one with an Aimpoint on the gun, it now wears a scope.  That load was  10.5 gr of 4227 and a 100 gr cast swc.  That load does 1050 fps from my gun and is my favorite load.  Buy it, you'll love it.  44 Man

Love the H&R.  Have had my 4 5/8" Ruger since 1985.  My S&W 631 came a few years later.  Without adjustable sights, they're mostly a plinker.  In light of today's situation, it is almost mandatory to be a handloader if you truly want to enjoy your .32.  Like others, I have not good results with .32 Longs, factory or handloads.  With good H&R loads, both guns will group under an inch off a bench at 25 yards, while Longs are more in the 3" to 5" range.  I haven't given up, but there is much more work to do.

I just got my second RSS9 32 Magnum. I love the cartridge and yes, 32 S&W Long can be used in that gun. Is your's a newer one with fixed sights or an older one with adjustable sights?

I really like  the .32 H&R - have a Ruger SS, small grip frame in gloss stainless.  It's the gun I carry and use most often on the ranch.  I've taken a couple of javelina, several coyotes, many rattlers, and jack-rabbits with it.  Can't see any point in using .32 S&W or S&W Long unless you already have the ammo.  .32 H&R is getting more available what with cowboy shooting.  I reload so that makes it economical to shoot a lot.  Rainier plated bullets are pretty cheap for practice, and for small game Hornady HP-XTP works great.  Like the cartridge enough that I bought a Marlin 1894.
