I have retired a couple from horseback with my 475 FA and one or two in the pastures with the same gun.  4 1/2 inch FA 475 with Express Sights.

I carry a .357Sig and shot at them in the back if I see them, but I would not call that hunting.  When I unit I prefer the shotgun, but am waiting on a .223/12 combo to arrive.  I dont see why yoiu could not use a handgun if yoiu where a really good shot at 75 yards during the day.

I have used a TC 14" 223 scoped with a 3x9  rifle scope to retire a few out to around 150 yards. This works great with superb accuracy. I have useed the 63 gr spitzer bullet since the coyotes were shot while whitetail hunting with the same setup. I have taken 3 deer with this bullet 2 shot in the neck and 1 shot through the lungs. The neck shots dropped in tracks and the other ran about 40 yards. The only problem is that there was no blood trail with the latter. The shot was a high lung shot. All were shot using a rest and a top hand hold on the scope.

If I am specifically lookin' for yotes and am totin' a sidearm for that purpose it is usually my old Tokarev shooting the fast moving hollow-point offerings in 7.62x25mm.  It works for me.  Mikey.

6" Colt Grizzly .357 w/125-JSP, or
7.5" Bisley .44 w/240-gr JHP, or
7.5" Bisley .44 scoped (red-dot) w/240-gr JHP.

Which ever trips my tigger as I head out.

Same as Old griz; whatever trips my trigger or what I'm carrying at the time.  However, I always carry a handgun when hunting coyotes (calling) and if the conditions are right at the call site I will pull out the handgun to use if the yote comes in real close (50 yards or under).  I have used the .32 H&R, .357, .41, .44 Special and Magnum, .45 ACP, .45 AR and .45 Colt.  I have used hardcast bullets but prefer a high steppin' lightweight HP/FP in each of the above.  For example; with my .357 6" barrel Security Six I use a 125 XTP at 1690 fps. That's not your every day plinking load but it does interupt yotes whole day when used.

you can shoot one of them filthy coyotes with anything.I have taken folks out just with that intent in mind.most take those TCs single shots..he he he..I normally have to bring the animal in close then stop them in front of the hunter.I think it would be better to have a handgun that holds a couple more bullets myself.I have taken a handgun twice.and every time they hang up at 75 -100 yards.never can seem to bring them in close.but it is always at the end of the season..I would reckomend if you want to try this sport(handgun hunting the coyote.)start in early oct are late sept.that way you will get the dumb new ones coming in.and they will come right up to you.be carefull.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I'm going to try it this year with a Kel-tec PLR-16 and a 2x red dot
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!
