I am new to this forum.

I am looking for a single shot rifle with octanganal barrel... I would only consider an American or European made gun.  What are your recommendations?  Used or older is fine.  I will be using it for elk hunting in the rockies...

I have a Browning B78 in 25-06 that is a sweet shooter. I have owned it for 15 years. I believe the rifle has had the trigger worked on

All depends on what you want to spend. Sharps rifles by Shiloh, C. Sharps, and Pedersoli are good. High-walls by Browning or Winchester get a good rifle in a huge range of cartridge chamberings. You can also put an octagon barrel on lots of different guns, like Ruger #1, even though they don't have such barrels from the factory. Then there are Ballards, Remington Rolling-blocks and Hepburns (most of those are custom builds). Harrington and Richards makes a good, inexpensive break-action, NEF Handi-Rifles, and TC Encores also if you're looking for something modern.

 If you go with an older single shot rifle, I would suggest you don't go any smaller than .45-70 for elk. Newer guns will give lots more choices, but old guns wont allow you to "push" the velocities and pressures, so you need to get big calibers to make up for using loads that are easier on these fine old guns.
 You didn't mention a price range, and depending on whether you buy a genuine antique, or a high quality reproduction, you're looking at some very large dollars!
 The newer Brownings and Winchesters are excellent choices for old style, with modern steels and yet affordable prices! Lots of good elk calibers too!

I've got a 2002 "Friends of the NRA" Browning 1885 in caliber 45-70 that I'd be willing to part with.  I bought it with the intentions of putting iron sights on it.  Now I've come to learn that it's incompatible with tang sights.  It has about 20 rounds fired through it to break it in. And has Leupold scope bases / rings on it.  I'm located in Colorado Springs, CO (close to the Rocky Mountains).

Well I just bought one yesterday. A low wall Winchester 1885 in .17HMR. This rifle was made in Japan by Miroko. It has a 24" octagon barrel, case hardened action, underlever and the curved steell but plate.

It toke me all day to put a scope on. The Leupold bases did not fit too well. That cam-in front base is a real dog to line up. It was the only set of mounts I could find.
There has to be a better mouse trap. The scope I used is a Burris 6x HBR  with a 1/8" dot. Not the best reticle for hunting and field shooting.

This is a nice looking rifle with a silk smooth falling block. Alas it did not have a manual in the box and nobody could say where it was.

I dampened the barrel with a rubber block between the hanger, and a damper on the fore arm tip. This also works extreamly well on a Ruger #1. The Ruger # 1 is my favorite single shot.
