Hey everyone. Are the 223 sporter barrels as accurate as the bull barrels?
I am selling my bull barrel because I don't like the extra weight to carry around in the field. I bought the gun with the bull barrel, and it is extremely accurate. Even killed 1 coyote with it last season. I just think it's more suited to sitting on a bench and shooting p-dogs than carrying around.
If you offer to buy, I'm afraid I can't offer to sell at this time, as it's being sold on an auction site. I won't name it or give any links. Don't want to run afoul of Graybeard's rules.
Also, I have been reading that the 308 barrels have issues with throat length. Do they shoot factories ok? My reloading stuff was stolen from my mother's house when I was stationed in Korea. So I'm not set up to reload as of yet.

Maybe I'm crazy but when I have a rifle that shoots good and I've got a load already figured out for it. I hang on to it. Since the weight is the issue, work out and become stronger. I like a light rifle also but I sometimes carry a heavier rifle simply because its more accurate and shoots a better bullet for the game.

All H&R rifles with few exceptions, have long throats, but they still shoot good with factory ammo or handloads, most who handload will try to reach the lands, depending on the bullet weight, some can, most can't with the lighter bullets. Those that can't, usually load to SAAMI COL and don't have any problems achieving an accurate load. If the search function was working, you could find bunches of threads relating to long throats, it's a question asked often. too often!!

The standard contour barrels shoot well in all calibers, the superlights in .223 and Hornet also shoot well from all reports here, not so with the .243, although it can be made to shoot well, it's just not so easy.

I'm with Lives2Hunt, if you have an exceptional shooter, don't get rid of it, you'll kick yourself down the road, it's a common regret here among Handiholics!!

Granted the 1 pound diffrence does add up in a all day hunt , i think a set of syn. stocks would have been a better choice than a lighter barrel if the bull shot well.

Thanks fellas for helping me see the error of my ways.
Lives2hunt- My strength is not an issue by a long shot. I didn't complete 4 years of US Marine Corps and 16 years of Army by being a weakling. Thanks for the advice, though.

I never meant to imply that you were weak or not strong enough and I'm sure you didn't take it that way. Sometimes people just don't appreciate what they have and thats a shame. Like I said I have a HEAVY 7mm Re. Mag. and it shoots better than I can. I know that it won't miss the mark if I do my part so I will lug it (and hate its weight) but its a pure pleasure and privalage to shoot it.

To be honest I'm very weight concious and when I have a ways to go I get rid of everything that isn't absolutely necessary for the hunt. If successful I will field dress the game and come back to it after I have locked up my gun and picked up my game carrier. Carry on soldier!!

rugbynut, you didn't come off like a jerk to me and there isn't any reason to be sorry about your responses. Everyone has the right to buy & sell for whatever reason they choose, thanks to good men like you and all the other brave servicemen & women fighting for our freedom and rights.

Oh and I own the sporter barrel .223 and I'm still trying to get a better group out of it which will just take more loads & time, so I'm envious of your great shooter, ha. Carry on.

I still remember the guns I once had and parted with because of other priorities. As much as I wanted to keep them, I'd sell them again because I place a higher value on what is more important. Fact is I'd sell everything I own if need be. Things are not more important than people. You can replace things but a man can't afford to lose his peace of mind.

I got a nice surprise from the Army when I returned from Nam, they had overpaid my wife and she'd spent the money, so I had to stay in service an extra 4 months to pay it back!

But it worked out for the best, my son was born on their nickel, and a career employment opportunity that I wouldn't have had earlier, was available when I did ETS!!

Things have a way of working out for the best!

Sorry to hear you had to sell barrel rugbynut,but I can understand,I've had to do same thing before.Look at the bright side,you got a very good price out of it!

Well, I am thoruoghly pi$$ed off! I only got 1 email from the buyer. Sent him 4 emails with no response. Guess I'll have to find some other way to pay bills. Oh well. Maybe I can make enough shooting coyotes and such.
I'm sure you noticed the name change. I haven't played rugby for about 6 years, so I figured it was time to change it. Benaiah was a hero in the Bible, one of David's mighty men. Maybe the buyer had an emergency or some such, may be something entirely within reason that's beyond his control, he's got good feedback, he may still come thru for ya, hang in there.
