Very impressive hog.  I am one of those guys who frequently errs on the side of over-gunned. Your story brings things back into prospective.
The old veteran 30-30 is fondly remembered for the 40 million deer it has harvested. You certainly have given it a magnum appeal. :)  :)

I have got caught in the magnum mania  like most do  until a house fire claimed every rifle i owned except for this old marlin 30-30 that I loaned out  and  i  am glad i  loaned it  out  as  it  is  the  first gun that both my daughters killed deer  with  and  is  the single gun  that has   killed  my  big  hogs  my  trophy  deer  and  taken countlesss coyotes.  I  payed  a  meaningless 140.00  for  this  rifle  from  a  friend  and  it nwears a  chep tasco 3-9x40  29.00  at  wally  world   but  yest   it  shoots  around  1.5 inches  at  100  and  wears  a  recoil  pad  cut  to  13 inches   it  has  climbed  trees   fell  in  a  creek  been  banged  up  scratched up  amd  has  NEVER  changed  impact   I know  one  thing  when  I  go  elk  hunting  i  will  take  this  rfle  with  me.  as  i  believe  in  my  heart  i  can  get  withing 150  yards  and  put  a  170  gr  core  lokt  into  his  vitals.  This  rife  has  become   my  personal  favorite  for  hunting  not  only  in  therast texas  woods   bt  also  in  west  texas  where  ranges  can  exceed  my  guns  ranges   that  is  where  the  unter  in  me  and  takes  over.   This  forum  has  helped  make  me  the  hnter  i  am  today  as  i  have  applied  alot  of  you  alls  tactics  in  the  woods and  they  have  helped  Thamks   to  GBO

I too must admit that I am shocked.

I have seen much smaller hogs run off with shots from much larger guns!

Wow, factory non-premium core-lokts - that must be something!

Congrats.

Good Job, bullet placement and good old American "Can Do" hunting skills wins again. Confidence and experience is always more important than magnums and just the right camo.  I don't even know you, and I am happy for you.  See what you can do to get a photo of him up here.

Good Job

Way to go Howie!!!!!  You know you have the proof to show the magnum, over priced bullet guys, that Remington CoreLokt's the original controlled expansion bullet is still just fine.   And the 30-30 too!!!!   Someone around here posted a while back, an article written when the 30-30 was still new.  It was amazing that at the time, the pro hunters and gun writers couldn't say enough about how powerful it was and how they cleanly harvested all kinds of large game with it.  Some where along the way, alot of folks have been convinced that it is weak and no good past about 50 yds.  But we know that ain't true.  Way to go Howie.  I need to get one of those hog calls.  I missed several hogs Monday afternoon, due to the gusting wind though,  but the call might have helped.

Way to go Howie!  Man, that is a bigun!  Please!  Keep those down your way. I don't think my 4 wheeler would pull one that big out of the woods.

I can agree with you about not knocking a hog down.  I've shot a couple with 12 gauge slugs, good through both lung hits, and they ran 30 or 40 yards.  One was only about a 100 pounds and a sow!

we  all  live  in  Texas  and  rather  close Sqirrel  season  is  about  to  kick  off  in  3  weeks  maybe  we  can  hook up   for   some  pig  huning  and  squirrel  hunting  I  know  where  there  are  alot  of  hogs on  the  upland  wilderness  area and  the  suirrel  hunting  is  the  best.  For some  reason  the  30-3   is  very  efficient  the  muzle  energy  is  only  arond  1800 foot  lbs  and at  100   you  are  looking  at  only  about  1250   but  the  way  the  bullet  is  designed    for  penetration  and  rapid  exoansion  in my  opiion  helps  this  cartridge  out.   Those  Grunt  calls  actually  work   the  product  name  is  haydels   calls     BH-92 Boss Hog  this  is  not  a  squeler  call  but  an  actual  grunt  sounds  alot  like  a  magnum buck  grunt   but  you  use  your  hands  cupped  over  the  end  to  manipulate  the  call   i  ave  sat  and  watched   hogs  alot   and  i  knw  if  i  was  a  pig  it  would  fool me.   hogs  usually grunt  during  a  feeding  frenzy   and  they  aggresively  grunt  when  fighting   that  is  how  i  lured     my  hog  in    I  am  going  to   get  some  of  this   SOW IN Heat  stuff  from  Texas  Boars  and  see  how  t  works    they  say  if  you  spread  it  around   it  takes about  3  ays  and  you will  have  the  big  ones  comng  to  you.   there  was  a  story  about  3  months  ago  iabout  10  miles  from  me  in  a  town  called  Chester  about  a  guy  who  killded an  890  lb   boar   with a  bow    so  i  know  there  s  sone  big  ones  around  even  bigger  than  mine

That 890 pound boar came out of a little bow pen but was in a small hog pen only days before breeding show sows and being scratched by children.

Rope is your place north of Buttermilk Road?   I'm in the Buttermilk Hunting Club so your place must be real near one of my stands.
