22-243 middlested info
« on: August 26, 2006, 10:41:02 AM »
Recently  I was asking for information on the 22 Cheetah and have had my mind changed on that cartridge.  These forums really are very informative and helpful on making decisions for projects.  Now, I'm asking for feedback on the 22-243 Middlested.  That seems like a much more user friendly round.  The 308 BR cases needed for the 22 Cheetah just aren't available any more.  So, can anyone help me with reloading data, personnal experience or any info on this cartridge?  Also am interested in any dies if anyone has a set they want to part with.  Thanks everyone

HELLO, I had a 22-243 Middlestead.  got stolen by ex wifes boyfriend.  yea....i have load data and dies here, top of the line dies im sure, will have to check brand . Constantly looking for a middlestead to replace that one, had a fast twist for heavy bullets, spun many jackets of light bullets with the high speed.  Lovd that rifle, picked it up from gunsmith the day my daughter was born.  She (wife) got the kid, i got the Middlestead.  I was lovin life THAT day....Dallas

You would rather have a gun than your kid? ???  If that is true you have some problems.

The .224 Middlestead is a true 4100 FPS cartridge but if you want smoking look at the .224 Plummer which is a necked down version of the 6mm Improved.    %0 grain bullets and 50 grains of IMR 4064 will give you 4589 FPS and 48 grains of the same stuff with a 55 grain bullet will get you 4489 FPS.    Best 100 yard groups with my rifle measured for three shots .367".

If you haven`t order your gun yet you might want to consider the .22-6mm. I just took a Savage up to have barreled in this round. I was assured that I would have no trouble getting 3,500 fps with an 80 gn. bullet. The way I see it is that there is no use going to an over bore round like your talking about unless your going to shoot heavy for the cal. bullets. You can range the target and drop a bullet at the right distance, but the wind drif is always a guess. With the 80 gn. bullets in .22 cal. your drift will be abt. 1/2 what it is with a lite bullet makeing meaning you will get alot more first shot hits in the field where you often only get 1 shot.

The accurate reloading site has reloading data on both the 22-6mm and the 22-243 middlestead.  Their findings were that they produced the same velociities but the 22-6mm required about 5 grains more powder to obtain the same velocities.  Here is the link.

I have a 22 Cheetah barrel, I’ve fire formed brass and have dies already for it RCBS had them in stock.

To over come this obstacle I was told by 4D (company I rented the reamer and gages from) I can use 243 Winchester brass. As of right now I have 50 brass fire formed but need the necks turned.

I’ll see if I can find my notes and PM the steps I’ve taken if you like.
