Moon clip question
« on: August 26, 2006, 06:01:09 PM »
New to Moon clips I have never used them.

I have purchased a prototype 460 Supermag 45cal Double action. It came with factory rimless brass, and full moon clips, what do I need to shoot a full base cartridge like the 454 cusull or 460 S&W brass trimmed down to 1.610. The cylinder is fully machined for moon clips and when I chamber the 454 in it the case sits in to deep.

I have seen that you can machine out a 460 S&W for moon clips but how does that work being the 460 has a rimmed cartridge. Is there a moon clip you can purchase that will fit these cartridges?

Take care here.  I don't believe the Dan Wesson 460 is rated for the same pressure levels as the 454 Casull or the 460 S&W.  I think it's supposed to run pressures in the 44 Mag range.  (Which will still generate plenty of horsepower.)

Yes I understand the Supermag pressure's, This gun will never be a 460 S&W. but it will be more than the 454 Casull.

I am just trying to figure out how to shoot some 454 Casull's out of it, I am almost ready to start some reloads so I guess I really do not need too.

david try calling them i beleive there phone no is on the web page. What unspellable is stating is true theres a big differnce in power and pressure. The 454s are loaded to 50000 lbs of pressure and i dont think your dw will hold up to that for long. If you want to do it to use 454 brass and load it lighter thats another thing.

Unspellable this is the information that I received today.

"It can produce velocites that duplicate the new 460 S&W. During testing at the factory they shot experimental 200gr bullets at 2400 ft/sec with pressure at around 50,200 PSI. and they felt the round should operate at 50,000 with the proof loads at 70,000PSI."
