I just bought a new (to me) Contender carbine in 30-30. Got the 30-30 for fun, but I was thinking on getting another couple of barrels, starting with one from SSK. My question is, does anyone have experience with the 6.5 or .309 JDJ? I am looking for a decent cartridge for deer/javelina in AZ, maybe the occasional cougar or black bear hunt in AZ or WA, out to an absolute maximum range of 300 yards. I am also curious if the .309 would have enough energy for elk at 200 yards or less. I'm fairly sure the 6.5 does not. If the .309 is borderline on elk, I'll probably get the 6.5, then later on look at a .375 JDJ barrel as well.
DIdn't want to bug SSK with too many questions, as it'll be about 6 months before I am ready to order the barrel, but I want to get as much information as possible before I make my decision. I'm really liking this Contender, and I hope to make it my "do it all" rifle, retiring the bolts and levers.
Thanks for your replies in advance.
