Typical Accuracy for 22 Magnum?
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:14:25 AM »
I've been working with a new H&R Ultra in 22 magnum.  This is the first 22 Magnum that I have owned, or shot.  The bore has been polished and a rubber washer installed to free float the barrel, and a new 3x9 scope installed.

Have tried two different brands of ammunition so far, 1) CCI Maxi Mag and 2) Remington Primere ballistic tip.  After about 75 rounds my typical accuracy is about 1 inch at 50 yards.  Usually the Remington brand will have 5 shots evenly spread at 50 yards and the CCI will usuall y have 4 shots in a tight 1/2-3/4" cluster with one flyer that opens the group to about 1 inch.

Now, I'm not complaining, just would like to know what other folks typically get with their 22 Magnums.  Also, I get the feeling that the rifle shoots better as the bore gets dirtier....is this my imagination?

My 22mag sportster shoots better fouled than clean, my Marlin 25mn does too.

You should try shooting with the o-ring removed too--mine shoots best without it.  1 inch at 50 is not that bad though-but I'd be trying for better.  After you try the same ammo without the o-ring, try different loads--mine likes the cheap winchester stuff OK and the grey box very well indeed.  The Remingtin 40 grain HP shoots into 3/4" at 50 for me and since the smallest critters I'll be shooting are feral cats, and the farthest range will be 80 yards, that's fine for me.

Both of my sportsters shoot the Remingtons with the V-Max in a ragid cloverleaf at 100 yards but will not shoot the CCIs worth a hoot , they both hate clean barrels .

I am going to use one for a project barrel and have no doubt that my next one will shoot just as well .

Myself, I don't think 1 inch at 50 yards for a 22 mag is that good.  Maybe 1 inch at 100 yards.  Here are two targets that I just recently shot.  I didn't get to try all of my ammo.  It was just too hot to shoot.  As you can see the Savage outshot the NEF but I have shot some real good groups with the NEF so I do know it is capable.  Even I admit that most of the groups I shot wern't that good.  Shot from 100 yards.

Here is a 2 shot group I shot with my NEF 22 mag Ultra a while back.  I can't remember why only 2 shots, maybe I ran out of ammo, I just don't remember.  I have noticed that when the temps are real hot outside I don't seem to be able to group as well with some of my rifles.  This was from 100 yards.

Well, I may have found one reason for the occasional flier.  I was out looking for groundhogs and notices that the rear portion of the forearm on my ultra had a little side play even though the forearm screw was tight.  When I got home I removed the forearm and found that one of the screws that hold the rear cap of the forearm on was stripped out and couldn't be tightened.

I put Locktite on the cap then put locktite in the screw holes as well, don't think it is ever coming off now.  I also used a little JB Weld and bedded the forearm to the barrel.  Still need to re-check for accuracy, but the forearm doesn't budge at all now.
