The war was over and the Japanese had surrendered by this time.
During the occupation was there rape and theft. YES! This was lessend by the fact of Brothels and the fact that there was very little too steal.
Savannah surrendered.
Sherman had North and South Carolina in his sights and these were two states he wanted too make howl.
The effects were lessend on these two because of the surrender.

If you are saying that this happened in Japan after the war? Please give me a link or is this just some pie in the sky remark you pulled out of the air? As shown by the link above Sherman was only interested in Columbia SC. It surrendered to him much the same as Savannah and yet the results are as different as night and day.

I'm sure you will excuse Sherman saying that things got out off hand. Let me show you just how the military is suppost to handle these matters.

About a year ago a seaman was smoking in an area that was a non smoking area on board one of our Carriers. The resulting fire caused more than 1 million in damages. The Commanding officer was relieved of his command and cashiered. I believe it happened on the USS Abe Lincoln as a matter of fact. I'm also pretty sure the offending seaman is serving time in the Brig and I would think that the XO as well as the young mans' Department Officer got some sort of punishment; as well they should. As for raping and killing civilians you can look no father than Lt. Kalley and MyLei

We did not occupy Japan until the surrender.
Shermans blood WAS hot against the Carolina's and he was going too make them howl---and he did.
Patton's blood was hot against Germany and he made them howl.
The Russian's blood was hot against anything German---they did not give them a chance to howl.
The Texians were hot against Santa Anna---they whupped up on those boys pretty good at San Jacinto---As did Santa Anna at Goliad and the Alamo.
War is not good--it is not always just--and it is always horrible.
If you have too go too war---GO too war. We see the results of holding actions and half war.
Do not expect the enemy too be too courteous.

And this, Billy Boy, is the most profound statement I've heard uttered in a long time!   :(  Unfortunately the protected don't understand this.)  As we used to say, "war is hell, but actual combat is a MF!!"

William I've seen the Elephant so you don't have to tell me a thing about war. You have danced around my question????? No link just alot of talk from you. We are talking about mistreatment of civilians (Rape and Killings) that are unnecessary.

Patton never did or condoned any of that and I take that remark to be the most disrespectful I've ever read in any post on this thread. To say that George Patton or his troops (My Uncle fought with that man and he sure as hell didn't do any of what you claim) did anything like what you suggest, to me, is nothing more than to spit on their graves. I don't care what you say to me but you not only owe them an apology but the thanks and respect that is their due. I will say no more!!!

I respectfully apologize.
There are acts in wars that never get reported, talked of---admitted too.
They happen in every war. Too what degree is unimportant, even if only once.
The commanders lay down rules---things just don't get followed thru every once in a while.
Sherman had his hands full with some bummers.

I except your apology. Just why do you feel the need to qualify it by the other things you said? True enough there will always be men with no honor on either side. Its what the men in charge do about it that tell you if those leaders have honor or not.

Sherman had none!

I invite you to read my sig.:

Cannot say “I was told to do thus”
Or it was not “Convenient to be virtuous
at that time”.  -  "The Kingdom of Heaven"

It was just a qualifier too say that I understand your feelings.
The rape/pillage/stealing/murder by any is at the foot of the perpertrator, not the leader. There are many ways too say that.
The South had its share and denied and ignored and were not held responsible by the same standards.
