I'd say 99.99% of the people here would say do not carry a .45acp for grizzly protection, I know that I would never use one for that task.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

A 45 acp will never stop a grizzly.  Do not waste your time and effort as it will simply get you killed absolutely to death.  The 45 acp offers no protection against a grizzly, period.  Mikey.

You might try some penetration tests. I've done it and found that the 45ACP hardly penetrates at all. Perhaps if you try it compared to, say, a 44 magnum with 300 grain hard cast bullets, you'll see the difference. Personally, I quit using the 45ACP when I discovered that the 22 long rifle is about as effective on woodchucks as the 45ACP.

You've got the right caliber but the bullet needs considerably more "OOMPH" than the 45 ACP case can provide.  Something along the lines of a 454 Casull, 475 Linebaugh, or 500 Wyoming express is more up to the task.  Quite frankly, I'd opt for a 10 ga. shotgun with slugs if were my tush I was protect'n!

Been up to Alaska more than just a few times.

No.

IF you ever DO want to take on a Griz with a .45 ACP ... please let me video it.

If given enough room some of those land leviathans can get going - with focus and purpose - up to 45 Mph.

There won't be time for a very long video but the feeding portion may be of interest to us who missed it in the Timothy Treadwell documentary. :o

Last night as the dog barked at a bear in the yard I opted for the 3" Brenneke 1 3/8 oz. 12 gauge slugs in the 870 and was never worried.

I think that the .45 ACP will prove to be effective "bear spray"... just as long as you are sure you have a companion with you that you know you can outrun!!

Several hits might scare the bear away,,, or enrage into a murderous flesh ripping frenzy,, I am not sure.

OK! Have you ever reloaded your own ammo? The 45acp comes in a 230gr bullit. What gr. can you buy for loading your own. What is the heaviest powder charge? What is the heaviest bullit available? That is my question. I know that a factory load is not enough power for a grizzly. Rather than lug a heavy 454 or a 500 cal around, I would use my 12ga pump loaded with slugs. A least I could hold it up and hit what I'm shooting at. Now! lets try again. Or should I just use my super mag slingshot?

George Nonte did quite a bit of tinkering with 45ACP as a gun for hog hunting. The results were really dismal and he nearly got himself killed, or at least seriously injured. His partner saved him by killing a charging boar with a luck shot that stopped it instantly.

My record on woodchucks is rather unspectacular with the 45ACP. In fact, I've recently found that 22LR Winchester power points will stop a woodchuck much quicker than a comparably placed 45ACP bullet through the heart/lungs area. Granted, I don't shoot a lot of these critters, but I take enough of them to get a certain level of confidence in the equipment I'm using.

In summary, the penetration test I suggested will show you that if you were to shoot a hard creosoted 12 inch log (old utility pole) with a 45ACP at 50 yards, the bullet will bounce off the log. The 44 magnum bullet will go through it completely.  I'd like to see the 45ACP bullet that can compensate for that big a difference in performance.  Velocity matters too.

Rather than lug a heavy 454 or a 500 cal around,

Well, not to belabor my point ... I used to lug around a LARS Grizzly .45 Win/Mag and I
have a couple of .454's, too, BUT when I'm up at Talkeetna, AK ... it's my Smith 500 alllll
the way! 4" barrel and I can hit accurately at 50 yards every time ... the DA's been worked to
perfection and always filled with our Max. reloads ... and only NOW do I feel 'adequately protected'
from a Grizzly charge ... I think!

Armed only with a .45 ACP you'd probably have to ram it down the griz's throat and empty the
magazine for good effect - maybe even TWO!

A grizzly's skull is nicely armored at 1 1/2" in places. He's strong enough to (literally) knock a
horse's head off with one swipe. He charges with head down making for a much smaller target
than you'd think and he can run through you as easily as an F-150 can in a 45Mph. zone! He is
also a smart and wary stalker and can come up on the careless city slicker just as quietly as a
pussy cat.

I once was told a story, in a bar, by the local RCMP officer - in Dawson, YK - who was chased around
his living room - he and the wife - by a big grumpy griz who had come out of hybernation early - Feb. I
think - because of a mouth of abscessed teeth (bears don't die of old age, they die because of bad teeth)
and the ONLY thing that saved him (Mr. RCMP) was a ricochet off of one of his huge canines up into the
soft pallet into the bear's brain by the last of six .44 Mags. fired into his pursuer at close range! One shot in
a billion as the officer was fully airborne ... sailing across the kitchen towards a closed back door! His
story, already heard by his fellow knucks in the bar a thousand times, brought the house down ... and
impressed yours truly, into buying a 500 just as soon as it hit the market!

During the summer I never 'leave cabin' without it! ... and ... you know ... for the good feelings of well being
and self-preservation ... it ain't THAT heavy! 8)
