hey dw06, ive used both powders to reload and havnt had a problem at all. IMR 3031 is a little bit slower as i recall but it still killed the prarie dogs. now i mostly use IMR 4198 with barnes bullets for varmit rounds but i cant tell you what they do to a yote cause i havnt shot one with em yet. Both of these are great powders and have been accurate for me out to 400 yards if i put the dog in the bottom of the scope! ;D Well, i guess thats  my $.02.

I've used IMR 3031 with 25 grains and a 50 grain bullet which is a medium but accurate load. I prefer using BL-C2 with a medium load because I can meter the powder through without a lot of variance. The .223 is the only cartridge I meter powder with ... big fingers, small case and bullets.

BL-C(2)'s bulk-powder variant called wc-846, or Win' 748 or AA-2520 have all been Very Good powders for me in the .223 and .22-250.    imr-3031 is ok.....but does not give the same velocities and is harder to load......since it 'bridges' in the powder measure so much!

my most accurate load has been assembled with Rem' brass in the .223, though you may not read that so much anywhere else.

take care,

After trying 5 diffrent powders in my 223 , all i use any more is IMR 4895 , it works well on 40 gr. all the way up to 55 gr.

25 grains in a Win. cases works very well with the Speer 52 gr. Hps and the 55 gr. V-Max

My two favorites are the afore mantioned BLc-2 and H322. H322 is  the one I use most!!

Thanks guys,Just got barrel today and I think I got a shooter!!It shot three different starting loads with 50gr a-max and all were 3/4inch.So I'll keep going up and then try changing seating depth and bet it will get to 1/2 groups. After I get done with those I am going to try the 40gr v-max.I'll keep you posted.

dw06, Is your new .223 barrel a 1:9" twist?
I got a new "standard" .223 barrel with 1:9" for my Handi a few months back and have found 50 gr. & higher bullets have been
giving me much tighter groups. Despite unfavorable comments, I've been using Varget in my .223 loads.

Accurate Powder Company's reloading powder # 2230 ( also listed as AA2230 or the old name of MR-223 ) does everything I want in my .223 Rem.

I use my .223 to make holes in paper or dirt clumps.  It works for me.
Just my 2 cents

I'm having trouble posting tonight, so here goes:

I get groups consistently at .75-.5" using 26gr Varget, CCI 400 Primers and 50gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. I recently tried H335, and it's fantastic with 40gr V-Max; my best group was .33" at 100yds!
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

Hey Quick...

If he's got the new 1 in 9 inch twist barrel that is considered the ideal bullet weight in .223.

Sorry, those are my favorite loads for 223 in general. Haven't tested them all in the Handi yet. Will let you know when I do. And yes My 223 is brand new so should have the 1-9.

Don't count on it shooting the bigger bullets well, the Handi 1:9" doesn't have a good track record for shooting anything bigger than about 60gr well. What other brand of 1:9" barrels do has no relevance here, we are talking Handis, right! As far as being new and being 1:9" also may not hold true, when it was made is the determining factor.

I'm shooting 27 gr of Varget behind a 40 gr Nosler ballistic tip.  CCI 400 primer, Winchester brass.  Shoots 0.7" from my 1:12 barrel.

Those are good powders for .223.
So is 25gr/ 4895, used that for years til the barrel lost it's accuracy after 6000 rounds.

since then, went to AA2200/23gr. Got four jugs of it for $60/jug.  On the last jug now.

My gun's not a NEF in this cal though.  14" twist and I use 55gr, or 40gr.  V max are the most accurate in this gun.  How they'd do in a NEF I dont have a clue.  Should be a good bullet and loads though.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the help,I found my load for th 50gr v-max,it is 24.5grs of 3031 with oal of 2.315. I can cover three shots with a dime, and measuring with calipers I come up with .55 So am very happy with that, and should be going around 3100fps.Now I will start on the 40gr v-max,just to see what they will do.

Another bullet that worked well for me is the 45 gr. Hornady spire point.   Just make sure you get the .224 dia not the .223.   The Hornady number is 2230.   It worked well with H335 as well.

Tried most powders in my .223 NEF. Benchmark shoots the best for me with 55gr Noslers and Hornadays SP's. Win brass/BR4's/oal of 2.280. BenchMark is very clean too. It's a pleasure to use. W-748 is the dirtiest powder I have used...but is accurate in my NEF.

Thanks Coastwatcher, just so happens I have 2 boxes of the 45gr hornady #2230.I will be trying them and may even try them in reduced loads.223Shooter,may have to try that benckmark,I wondered about the ww 748,tried it in a 22-250 and shot well but I thought it was dirtier than my other powders in it.

Anyone used Viht N133 in their Handi? I liked that powder in my AR, but haven't replaced it yet (saving for a 223 Handi after we move).
