Saiga 308
« on: August 30, 2006, 04:58:09 AM »
My son would like a Saiga 308 to use as a deer rifle. How does the safety operate on this gun? It appears to be pushbutton . Is this gun well suited for a young shooter? He handles  my 308 Howa Lightning very well. Is this gun well suited for a scope?

I saw your question earlier in the day and I had hoped that someone with more knowledge on the Saiga 308 than I would answer it but here goes.  I have a Saiga 7.62/39 and love it.  The action is basically an AK-47 so it will be dead on reliable.  What you thought was the safety was probably the button that releases the bolt cover as the safety is usually a lever on the right side.  Most of these guns come with a left siderail that requires a special  scope ring set up.  I could not get mine to work and so I purchased a replacement bolt cover that had a scope rail on top of it.  The only problem was that the rail was not for Weaver rings but the size for a .22 set of rings.  Never the less I finally got it going and it shoots great and will easily outshoot both my SKS and my M-30.  You can’t beat the price but they are real hard to find in one of the local shops around here.  Believe me as soon as I find one in .308 I’m going to get it.
