6.5/06 vs 6.5/284

Any info on these two I can find seem to give very similar velocity with a 140g bullet.  Somewhere in the area of 2800 - 3000 fps.  What am I missing?  I'm trying to decide one one of these for an Encore, but like I said most info I can find put these two on par with each other.  I have read that the 6.5/284 is generally more accurate simply by the design of the 284 case.  I will use this primarily for whitetail and mule deer.  Any input  will be greatly appreciated. As I understand it, 6.5-284 cases are readily available and this casing seems to be all the rage. It might be fun. I too have read that it's very accurate.  I  like the 6.5 caliber (6.5x55) and there are some wonderful bullets available for it.  Good luck.

The reason they appear equal, is because the case capacities are very close. The .284 case is shorter, but fatter, with a rebated rim. I question the rebated rim with the Encore's extractor. But that maybe an unfounded concern.  As I don't have any personal experience with .284 case. I prefer rimmed cases myself.  I'm kicking around the idea of doing a 6.5-06 AI, based on the 7x65 R case. But that has nothing to do with your ?.  I don't think you could go wrong either of you choices, but I also have heard the 6.5-284 is slightly more accurate. Which could be due to the shorter powder column??.

Funny you mention the rebated rim 284 and Encores.  Mike Bellm just discussed this in his newsletter a day or so ago.  He says it works just fine, maybe better than the rimless cartridges.
