World's most useless handgun?
« on: August 31, 2006, 08:30:19 AM »
Have you ever had or known of a handgun that was really useless? I'm not talking about on old junker, I'm talking about new guns in good condition that were just very poor in so many ways that they were useless.

Any of the funky, far out, long, modified, heavy barreled and hybridized things coming out of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center.

Whatever happened to nonlugged blued steel revolvers?
Just my 2 cents

I'd say just about any gun for which there is not a representative sample in my gunsafe is just about as useless and they get!! ;D

I took a 45-70 Derringer in trade once. I figured it would be limited to cramming in a bear's mouth and just before the bear ate you. Don't know what would be worse, the recoil of the Derringer or being eaten. Never did shoot it.

Here's my last year's prototype - not in production yet but
pending acceptance by the military, it SHOULD be available

I think you're supposed to hand it to the bear and let him fire it. Then when he's grabbing his wrists and doubled-over in pain, you knock him out with with the box full of .45-70 ammo. ;D

My vote goes to the original AMT Backup. Too small to fit anyone's hand, slide too light, with the result being a jam every other round and pinched skin. By far the worst recoil I've ever experienced from a handgun... 'Though I never shot a .45-70 derringer.

zipperzap, back in the old days, me and my buddies called those Ravens, THROW DOWNS. Meaning if you shot somebody you shouldn't have, you took the throw down out of the plastic bag in your brief case and gave it to the guy on the ground before internal affairs got there. As I recall the fireing pin was also the ejector. What a concept! HOWEVER, if their still going for the same price as in 1975 I'll take a couple of those just for parts when you get'em into production. Hmmmmmmmmm

Scott, your development would look great in the hands of our wannabe Rambos/James Bonds!  The spike bayonet is a really nice touch for those with that mind-set.

I think it might sell very well to the BATmen too if you can get it into the gov. procurement system.  Those jack-booted, black-suited guys would love to have that at hand when facing down skinney women with possibly leathal babies in their arms, aka the "Ruby Ridge Theat Syndrome".

And just where is our hero Ron Harouche (SP?) these days?

 #1 mac 10
#2 american deringer corp model m-1 44 mag i still have the adc 44 just because of the    intertainment value when somebody wants to shoot it, very little practical value however.

The snub nosed revolver chambered in 17HMR made by Taurus has to be the most worthless gun I have seen.

If your going to move into revolver catagory, I will top you with the North American Arms mini-revolver chambered in the same calibur. It goes beyond snub nose. ;)

Tec-9 pistol.  Had a 32 round stick mag that required manual loading for every shot.  Sights were awful, and accuracy atrocious.  I was young and had watched too many movies.  I traded it straight-up for a FN-FAL! The best trade that I ever made.

I had a Llama revolver in 32 long once. It spit lead and you could not hit the barn wall, from the inside. I also had a Webley double action only in 38 S&W, it had a 32 lb trigger pull! Shotgunner

Most of these, I would agree with But I actually
have had a Raven for probably 20 years and I have never once had it fail to fire
or feed. Put every round on a paper plate at 10 yards too. Do I carry it?
Nope !!! Another is the MAC 10 For what it was designed for,
it is an exceptional weapon. Step into a room and Kill everything in it .
Some of the off-shoot Civilian semi-auto models were garbage but the true
Military Armaments Corp. (M.A.C.)  C.O.B.R.A.Y's or S.I.O.N.I.C.S were and are fine weapons.
I can remember only one jam out of literally thousands of rounds fired
from mine. It was a bad primer on the cartridge though. With a supressor
attached they are very managable in full auto fire, And several 32 round Mags of .45
ACP is pretty comforting to have in some of the narrow alleys of some far off place
such as Beiruit. The only Complaint I would have is that they did heat up pretty quick.

Is Japan manufacturing this modern marvel? Certainly California would not allow such activity.

Tec-22. Besides not being able to find an actual use for the thing, the one I had was terribly inaccurate and highly unreliable.

Other than that, I'd say just about any of the Raven, Jennings, Lorcin, etc pocket-sized pistols in 25acp or 22LR. They may have had their place at one point in time, but today there are many quality pocket pistols in 9mm and 40 S&W, so there's no realyl good excuse for carrying an anemic cartridge.

My buddy has a tiny RG in .22 LR that he couldn't hit a snake with at arms length, even after reloading it three times. It looks like a cap pistol, and the safest place to be is away from it!

I have one of those RGs that shoots a long rifle 22 bullet very accurately. I put 8 bullets into a 3/4 group with it. I think the barrel is only 1" long. Some guns are not as accurate as others but then sometimes it the bullet.

I don't want to make you mad but, I worked in a 20 year period two instances where an RG revolver was dropped and resulted in a fatality. One was a 14 yoa boy that had it (a single action) in a vest and bent over to pick up a shotgun. The revolver fell less than 2 and 1/2 feet landing hammer first on the reciever of the shotgun. The other was a double action revolver, stuck in a suit vest pocket, that fell out (once again less that 3 feet) when he reached down and picked up a baby out of the floor. The revolver landed on a tile floor, hammer first. The revolvers weren't being carried safely, however the drop safety in RG revolvers is pathetic, and dangerous to say the very least. Had these been Smith & Wesson, Colt, Ruger, or Dan Wesson, this would have never happened. The drop safety in these name brand guns is as close to 100% reliable as is possible while the drop safeties in guns like the RG are an accident waiting to happen. Having been a police officer (retired), weapons instructer, armorer, and gunsmith for over 20 years I have never had or heard first hand of a drop saftey failing in one of the the above mentioned name brands. In the RGs I have never heard of them performing safely. Good luck, but MY consience tells me to warn you, to get rid of it.
