Just finally ordered the sb2343 or 243 HB Handi-rifle for my son... If the 243 kicks too much, I'll be sending it off for a 357 or 30/30 barrel and shoot managed recoil loads out of it... I was wanting to find a 243 youth, but to find them they wanted $285 same as the H& R heavy barrels... I think handi's are nice but that nice??? So, I shunned the local gun shop and went to wally world and had to order the 243 Heavy barrel... but saved 40%... I have a 4x redfield widefield I am going to put on it and we'll try it out!!!

I will either have to order a youth stock or cut this one down (maybe should just order a second stock to cut down and put this one back on later?)

Any one tell me how hard or difficult it is to replace the buttstock on these things?

What is a good lighter kicking 75 yd deer round??? The lightest factory loaded round I see is the 90 grn sirroccos...

Or should we start with ighter varmint stuff and then I resight it in with a heavier deer round???

Any first hand experience with these younger folks would be greatly appreciated

Thanks folks, I think we're in for some fun... As last year I took an adult out for his first deer hunt and he got his first deer on public land in just under an hour... The joy from that hunt was greater than just about any deer in the past 20 years... I can only imagine how its going to be with my son....

 Slasher, Very very easy re change but stocks, Takes 9/16 socket, 10 or 12 inch exension,
 Take butt pad off look in the hole, there is the stud. Good luck Marv.

Hodgdon has some reduced load data in there youth section, all of them are based off on H4895 loads If memory serves it's an 80 gr bullet @ around 2800 fps. I also experimented with Bluedot (search accurate reloading and www.jamescalhoon.com article "to bee or not to bee" for references) and reduced loads and it did work well, but the BD loads were not low pressure loads just lower speed so care need to be taken.

I'd think Remingtons 80 grain pointed soft point would be a very good deer round for much more than 75 yards, kick less and still expand properly. I shot my first deer when I was 12 with a 243 100 grain pointed soft point at about 100 yards. Used that rifle till I was 25, then got a 30-06.

  The 243 is a good choice. But FYI concerning the lighter factory loaded bullets. The 80 grn bullet is considered a varmint weight bullet. It is constructed to expand rapidly for two reasons. One is because the intended targets are small and offer less resistance to the bullet and second. To minimalize ricocet's. I am not saying it will not kill, it can give horrific wounds that are very shallow. The conditions would be very good for losing the animal. this is not the way I would like to start out a new read impressionable hunter.

 There is a big difference between a 80gr bullet loaded down to 2800 and a factory 80 bullet at 3300fps.

 With the 243 90grns and up are considered big game bullets. One exception that comes to mind would be the 85gr Partition.

Federal loads both the Barnes and Sierra heads though your looking at two completely different bullet types the Sierra is a softer big game head and the barnes is on the other end (though the tsx are supposed to open up reliably) I personaly regret not trying the Barnes head while I had my 243 but since you are talking smallish deer the seirra should dump them just as well.

GREAT I guess we'll try a box of both a box of lighter HP to get him used to shooting... I prefer a decent round as we do have some deer that go 175-200lbs, but I doubt with the lil fella fidgetting around he'll get a shot at anything like that... but I let a nice 8pt go twice last year and he liked the area that I built the box blind in, so he'll be all grown up and you just dont know... we may get a surprise

Federal loads the 80gr Speer hot-cor in their Power-Shok ammo, not too expensive to be trying it out.
