I have an M1 carbine that has jammed on occasion. The only time it jammed was when using soft point ammo. It works jam free with fmj ammo. Also a clip is often to blame for semi auto jamming problems. Try a different clip and or some fmj.

Does it jam on opening or closing?
Does the fired case not eject?
Does the new case fail to feed?
Does it just not return to battery? (the case is chambered it just doesn't close the slide all the way)
Does it not pick up the next case from the nagazine?

The more information you can provide the better we can pinpoint possible causes

I,ve tried changing mags, fmj ammo but the wpn continues to jam all different ways-stovepipes,failure to feed, failure to fully lock etc.I talked with a ww2 vet who stated that they were notoriuos for jamming although I can,t see the gov,t issusing a wpn that wasn,t reliable.              thankT-T

Can't see the Gov't issuing a weapon that was Unreliable!
Man they still issue one!
As for the problem at hand though,
Sounds like you have a partially blocked gas port.
Or a weak recoil spring.
Also sounds like a new Gunsmith way be needed. ;D
The Iver Johnson is not an exact copy. Although some parts
will interchange, The Milspec tollerances were a bit looser.
The M2 (or full auto version) was notorious for jamming,
the M1 was not. Gun parts Corp should have the spring
The gas port you should be able to take care of yourself
with a field manual and a pipe cleaner or two.

I would suggest a good cleaning of the gas system, a close inspection of the port, piston and rod. Clean and lub the recoil spring and cavity followed with oiling it with a 50/50 mix of Dextron II ATF and Kerosine.
Once you have it clean and lubed use it with 50 rounds of Winchester FMJ ammo. Then when you reload use H110 to load for it. This powder is very good for the carbine and its gas system.
It sounds to me that the gas port is either plugged or the piston is worn. This causes the impact at the bolt to be slow and too light to turn the bolt and push it back fast enough to successfully operate the action. there are gauges and specs that you can use to determine whether the parts are worn and need replacement or just dirty and sticking. These are fine weapons when properly maintained and you should be able to have a lot of fun with this gun.
