I use the 16 ga. mostly because of nostalgia, it was my 1st gun. I have had many great times with this gun from the time i was 11 years old to the present. ( 46 y/o) I use the marlin .22 mainly because it eas low cost and accurate.

If I'm in an area with grouse I take my Ruger Red Label in 28 gauge.  If I can use a rifle safely I have an Anschtuz .22 with a Redfield scope.  I've been thinking about a .17 mach2, the one that's a Long Rifle.22 necked down to .17.  That should be even a better squirrrel gun than the .17 HMR.  Our club is raffling one so I think I'll buy a few extra tickets on it. ;)

Marlin 880 with factory camo stock and Simmons 3x9 rimfire scope....

The gun that got me back into squirrel hunting after 10+ year hiatus....

For some reason when I bought it over a decade ago, I wanted a rifle that was clip fed. Clips are fine when hunting, but when I take it out plinking I wish I had bought a tube gun. Marlins clips are only 7 or 10 rounds. Over the many years Ive decided that this was the best $150 Ive ever spent.

Those two grays you have there are faster than the reds, aren't they?

Texas is full of foxes but greys are only in the far eastern part of the state, so I never dealt with them until last year's trip to the Caddo Grassland.

Some days after trips up there I swear that you shoot foxes but you hunt greys, at least with a rifle. The rascals wont stop moving, are much smaller, and seem to be much warier, especially where theyve heard a gunshot or two.

Yea, I know. I live near Sherman, west of Bonham. I go over to Bonham in the motor home once a month to unwind. They have grays and fox both. Grays are like white tail deer. Never still. Fox are like muleys. They aren't in such a hurry and bigger.

28 guage pump-gun,,,fun,,,fun,,,fun!!!! :D :D

I had the chance to go with guys who had mountain curs and one had an 870 in 28 gauge.  I love that gauge and might even use my Red Label at times.  That would let me have an open choke for the occasional grouse & a tighter choke for squirrels high in the trees.

:DHey pup!,,mine is a 870 also,,,the only 870 I ever considered owning,,25",,vent-ribbed,,fits and swings just right,,,what got me was when I benched it to pattern for turkey at 25 yrd.sI didn't hardly feel nothin' when I touched 'er off,,everything was fine but that gun is so sweet handlin'!!!,now 1oz. of shot @1200 f.p.s. generates the same in a 28 or 12 in a gun of the same wgt.,,but the 870 is lighter than my 1200,,,I love that 28 guage!!!,,and a high brass load of #5s @ 25 yrd.s chops that ugly ol' turkey head like a sharp axe,,,,,,,,,,,well,,,almost,,trhe only thing I use my 12 for now is hogs and pass shootin',,I love the 28!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

Yeah.  The 28 is a fine gun.  I load 3/4 oz of #6 over Blue Dot and it goes out at 1260.  It drops pheasants as dead as my 12.  I also have a Special Field Edition 1100 in 28, but it spits the empties so far that I have a hard time finding them for reloads.

My fovorite squirrel gun is my H&R/NEF Sportster in .17Mach2. For ammo to shoot out of it It's a toss-up between .17 Mach2 ammo or shooting the 20 grain .17 Agulia in it, they are each great, and so accurate it's down right scary!!!....<><....  ;D

  Skycrab99 ;

I've got an 880SQ..but I had to Camo the black syn stock myself...where did you get the factory camo stock ?

The 880SQ sure is a nice rifle for the squirrel game...

Actually, someone asking me which is my favorite .22 rifle... is rather like asking which of one's children is your "favorite"..it would seem a betrayal to  label any of them as the "favorite"..

I'll be using a .25 caliber airgun to go after them soon.  Cottontails, too.  I'll also use my .45 airgun if I'm in the mood.

Well, my favorites have changed considerably since I first posted on this thread over 4 years ago.

Went back to hunting predators traditional and that lead to also shooting varmints with the old muzzle loaders.   So one of my two 32 caliber traditional muzzleloaders would be my first choice... then one of my two 36's second.   36's first if the ranges are longer.

If I had to choose modern, first would be my Contender 17M2 pistol, second would be either my CZ 17M2 or Ruger 77/22 switch barrel wearing the 17M2 barrel.   This round was just made for squirrels.

If shotgun, my Contender 410 carbine (although I don't like to hunt squirrels with a shotgun).
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

My great-grandfather's Stevens 44 1/2 match rifle in .22 LR/L/Short with original matching 6x Stevens external adjustment scope. :)  It's a true match rifle, shoots sub .1" at 25 yds with match ammo and a good rest, 1/2" groups at 100 ydsl.  With short hollowpoints from CCI it shoot MO squirrel head out to 50 yds off hand.  Full bull 28" barrel with scope or the Pope tang peep sight with changeable globe sight inserts.  Yeah, I know, I'm spoiled, but it's fun!  I just picked off 6 this morning, unfortunately two died without a twitch and are still on the top of the branch...

For many years I used airguns...
« Reply #141 on: October 31, 2007, 08:44:47 AM »
And sometimes still do.

The places where I hunt aren't conducive to using full-power .22 ammo and shooting into the air.

Just yesterday, I took out a Romanian M69 .22 rifle that I've sighted in for CCI CB caps. I was lucky enough to get shots at 4 before I headed back to the truck. (for me, 4 is plenty enough for a squirrel-fry, I was going to stop at three until another one ran out in front of me).

The CBs are extremely quiet... all you hear is that "WHOP!" when they hit.

Up until a year ago, I shot a Winchester model 60 pump .22lr I loved that rifle, however my fiance now shoots that and I shoot a Traditions Crockett in
32 caliber. A .315 round ball on top of 30gr of Pyrodex P. Knocks the limb bacon right out of the tree. I love that rifle.

Thanks for you kind comment. Those are only the second pair of Sambar Stag target size, that I've seen and the other pair didn't fit as well as these and belong to a retired ISP trooper friend of mine.

As I stated earlier..usually it is my 880SQ..

My Dad used to hunt squirrel with a shotgun. I recall a time shortly after our house burned and that Ithaca 20ga was the only thing saved besides the clothes on our backs,
that the shotgun afforded about the only meat we got.
However, after a few times chomping on #6 pellets with hair still attached..I decided it's rifle for me...LOL

Depending on my mood I'll take one or two of the following: Ruger 10/22, 77/22, 77/22 hornet, MK2 slab side,  contender with 10" 22LR or 14" 17mach2, Or a very old 22 that has been past down though the family that I learned to shoot with.

My current fav is the 77/22 with the Mk2 packed along for the ride.
