Good another who hunts squirrels with a .223.
Mine is a Winchester Stealth. It's good as far as you can see them. Doesn't mess up the meat either, takes the heads clean off :)

I worked up some really hot, highly fragable loads. As long as there is something behind them in case of a miss they are safe loads. Only problem is that if there is anything inbetween them and the barrel the bullet won't make it.

Old Griz,

Pardon my spelling it's Theoben not Theoban.  I was in a hurry and didn't check the spelling.  Theoben is the English air rifle company that manufactures some of the air rifles that Beeman imports into this country.  One of the best known is the Eliminator which Beeman has re-named the Crow Magnum.  They are also the manufacture of the Beeman Super 12.  The Rapid 12/250 is a 12 shot, .25 caliber, bolt action PCP(pre-charged pneumatic) rifle that shoots a .25 caliber pellet over 900 fps. giving it over 40 fpe..  One of the most powerful .25 caliber air rifles made today.  It has a 23" barrel and uses a 400 cc air bottle for it's power supply that doubles as a forestock.  If you want to check out there products the their web address is http://www.theoben.co.uk/.  Great rifles with a great guarantee.  Lawdog

I have about a half-dozen .22LR rifles I have shot squirrels with but my favorite is my Contender with a 10” .22LR barrel and a 2x scope, don’t remember the brand.   It shots every brand of shells I feed it, is as accurate as any of my rifles and weighs a lot less.   It is easier and quieter to move through the woods when using it too.

BTW, it has a standard chamber but I guess I got a real good one.

I like to use a 1939 model 87A springfield semi auto 22. The bolt can be locked so you can fire it without the action cycling another round. That makes for an extremely quiet shot. Most of the time I can get several squirrels out of the same tree before they figure out what's going on. It'll shoot shorts longs and lr, it cycles the shorts about 70% of the time on it's own. Best of all it will flat lay em down.

Marlin 880SQ....CCI green tag...also a Marlin 7000. I recently purchased a CZ 452 special that may just supplant the Marlins before the season is out.
BTW Howie; I have a couple brothers that live in Bridge City...just got home from visiting them..

Howie I am with you. I used a Marlin 60 and a 10/22. Both have a 4x32 scope, and never fail to bring home the game That is if I do my part.

My Kimber 82 Super America with Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20 EFR scope... shoots 1/4"groups at 50 yards with target ammo and if I miss it's me.

My rifle before this was a Remington 541-S with Weaver V12 4-12 scope using CCI Green Tag that accounted for hundreds of bushytails... also quite a few crows, turtles, starlings, grackles, and a couple of bunnies.

The one crow that I shot which wasn't killed instantly was shot from almost directly underneath after it swooped in and landed above me while I was squirrel hunting... I couldn't resist the temptation (and the season was open).  It was knocked down but was still alive on the ground and needed a finisher.  All of the others were shot as they came into a call and landed 30 yards out to look-see, or after I stalked to within range of a perching crow.  They all died instantly with chest shots from front, back, or broadside using standard velocity target ammo.

I have shot one squirrel with standard velocity target ammo that needed another shot. It was hit in the mouth and was stunned enough to just sit there until I shot it through the head.  Almost every other squirrel was shot through either the head or neck and dropped instantly.  I did shoot one squirrel through the chest behind the shoulder and it also dropped instantly.  When I was a boy I hunted grey squirrels with hollowpoints and it really tore them up on body shots.

I consider squirrel hunting with an accurate .22 LR rifle to be the most enjoyable hunting on the planet.

I quit using shotguns, I save them for the ducks.  Last year I used a Remington Nylon 66, Browning (Belgian) 22 auto, a tricked out 10/22, and a 6.5" Single Six.  Next year I plan to try Contenders 10" and 21" in 22 and a 10" .410 (I know it is a shotgun but I haven't killed anything with it yet), a Marlin 39M, and maybe one of the new 17HM2 that aren't out yet.

My favorite 22 ammo is the Remington subsonic hollowpoints.

I use a T/C Classic with a Leupold M8 6x Compact scope, I set the parrallex to 50 yards and use .22 SGB (CCI Small Game Bullet).  Groups will average just over .525" at 50 yards.  The same rifle has also had a 4x12x40 Bushnell Trophy and a 12x Leupold on it.  CCI had discontinued the ammo but have recently brought it back.

I use a Marlin 883 .22 Mag with a Bushnell Sportview 3X9, and a 1970"s vintage Contender with a 10" heavy .22 LR barrel with a Bushnell Phantom 2.5X scope. Same for rabbits. Both will shoot better than I can.

Squirrel sniping IS the most enjoyable hunting on the planet - as easy or challenging as you care to make it, and they're easier to pack out than whitetails.  More generous bag limits, too.

Handguns: S&W Mod. 41 semi-auto with any accurate HP; any accurate .38/.357 with light loads and a safe backstop.

Rifles: For 30+ years, Anschutz 54 Sporter in .22 Mag., with 'solids' and a 4x Leupold; same in .22 LR with selected HPs (RWS Subsonics), CCI SGBs, or Velocitors; old (like me) Win. 52B Sporter with Lyman 48 and same general loads as the Anschutz; for under 50 yards - Browning .22 Auto in .22 Short, with 4x scopes and HPs.  Specialty loads include CCI CB Longs  (nearly silent in long barrels and near my set point of aim/impact at 25 yds; head or center-chest shots are effective).  I otherwise avoid 'solids' in the long rifle as I've had a few escape wounded and can't justify the experience.  Accuracy testing of different available loadings provides confidence for the longer shots.

I haven't tried the .17 HMR, yet, and would like to hear of anyone's experiences with this round on bushy-tailed tree rats.

While I haven't tried the .17 HMR on tree squirrels I did try it on Ground Squirrels.  Results show if you plan on eating any of the tree squirrel you had better hit them in the head.  Body shots will leave you no meat for the pot.  Lawdog
