nosler bullets
« on: September 02, 2006, 02:25:20 PM »
Just Loaded some 120 gr. 7mm Nosler ballistic in my 7tcu with 25gr of Hodgon 322.
They cut bullet holes at 50 yards.Don't know fps. Question is about bullet expasion for deer.
I used 120 Vmax good expansion not good penatration. I've shot Serria 120 soft point no expansion
Is the Nosler a good bullet for a shoulder shot?
My barrel is 10 inches.
Thanks for any input.

I don't remember the specific load but am sure it was about book max but when I used that bullet and powder I was getting only 1850 fps from my 10" 7 TCU.

I prefer the Sierra SSP 130 over all others in the 7 TCU and 7-30 both. It just plain works.

PM,

If your looking for a deer bullet from Nosler, you should probably be looking at the partition bullets instead of the ballistic tip bullets.
You can find them here http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=117876.

Of course, I do not know how they will shoot from your barrel.

Dave.

Not really, the BTs are considered as good as it gets in the TC handguns in such instances as is the topic of this thread.

Yep!

It is the remaining Velocity at the point of impact that determines the performance of most bullets & at Contender velocities the Ballistic Tip excells, whereas the 3,000fps plus rifle loads will turn especially the light for cal. BT's sometimes into bombs.

I use the 150BT in a 30-30AI Cont. & the performance is great!

I used the 120 gr. nos. b.t. for both a 7 tcu and 7mm benchrest and have had good results on deer.  I don't think you would get much expansion using a nosler partition at 7 tcu velocities. the longest shot with the 7br was 125 yards with quick results.

Where do you find the Sierra 130 ssp?  Sierra still lists it but I can't find anybody selling it.

I thought I heard or read somewhere that Sierra stopped manufacturing their Single Shot Pistol Bullets. Someone please tell me that is not true.

I use nothing but Nosler 165 gr BT in my 309JDJ. I  have shot probably 12 or 14 deer with it and have had some softball size exit holes!!!
Big difference between a 30 cal 165gr @ 2300 FPS and 7mm 120 @ 1900 FPS.

I'm curious...i quit using nosler b/t is rifles because of core separations, and no exit hole...in 270, and 308...in 7x30, and 30-30...do you get mushrooms and exit holes? d451

Yes to the exit holes & because of that I cannot tell you what the bullet looks like, but the exit holes indicate good expansion, so it becomes a
moot point in this case. Also, I am in reference to the tougher Bal. Tip., you probably know that the bullet was made tougher a few years ago
& that has also made some difference. But even with these newer Bal. Tips, the key is to not use a light for caliber bullet combined with high
velocity, under those circumstances they can still be a bomb. But at Contender velocities, a 120 in 6.5 or 7mm, a 150 in the 30-30AI or as stated above a 165 in the 309JDJ is a perfect match.
