New to Savage
« on: September 03, 2006, 02:31:26 PM »
Howdy all! I just ordered a Savage 10GLXP3 Left Hand model from Walmart. $463 Package deal .308
Was just wondering if anyone had shot this model. Are these pretty good shooters?

I migrated from a Model 700 Remington in .270, as times got bad and had to sell it.

Looking forward to working up a good handload. Any suggestions would be grteat!

Welcome to the Savage family.  I don't have the particular model you bought, but I've got a few other Savages I've been pretty happy with.

Regarding handload suggestions:  I've got a .308 Win in a Remington 700.  It's pretty easy to load for and shoots most everything fairly well.  The load I've settled on is Varget behind a 150 grain Sierra gameking.  But it does nearly as well with IMR4064 or Hodgdon's BL-C(2).  The 150 gamekings have shot so well the only other bullet I ever tried in it was the Hornady 165 gr Interbond.  They haven't shot as tight as the 150 gamekings, but still shot well.  I think the .308 is pretty easy to load for and will get along well with most 150-180 grain bullets and medium-fast to medium speed powders.

Offline .308 Win.

Just as SodBuster says, I don't have your model either but I have owned a couple of Savage rifles and I will have to say I have loved them.  Button rifled barrels are a nice thing to have on rifles that traditionally aren't very expensive.  Savages are just shooters, period.  I now have a Remington 700 and the Savage and I parted ways for the same reason you parted with your Remington.  If I had but one rifle with which to hunt deer/elk, etc., I would feel extremely well outfitted with anything in the Savage centerfire line in a caliber suitable to the game.  The rifles are just great as far as accuracy and reliability.  Most lack in asthetic quality but more than make up for it in ways it truly counts. I have been thinking very hard about going back to them instead of using the Remington.  If money is a consideration, the Stevens 200 is an excellent buy for the money.  It lacks the Accutrigger but a little gunsmith magic (50.00 or so) will make a tack driver out of it.  A lot of gun for little money.
