Pronghorn medicine
« on: September 05, 2006, 03:12:49 AM »
Harvested an Antelope yesterday 8).  After a 3-400 yard belly crawl and an hour and a half "stare - off", I managed to get a nice rest on an irrigation pipe.  The proghorn dropped from sight so quick that I thought I may have missed :o.  I forgot my range finder and had to guess at the distance (180-190).  I went back and lased it and I turned out to be right on (186yds).  If I would have had it originally I would have taken a heart shot, I ended up w/ a lung shot.  I expected the critter to run a bit, but it fell where it stood.
It is hanging in my reefer trailer now (I drive a truck for a living) and will butcher it in 2-3 days.

That is great news. I fondly remember eating pronghorn some time ago. It looks as if it will not happen this year as there is too much going on.

I'm going on a mule deer/antelope hunt in Wyoming next month.  I've got to buy a tag for both and hope to get one of each.  Never killed an antelope.  I'm going to carry my Weatherby .300 Mag for the long range shots.  That will be good medicine for both animals.

I use a 300 Wby for elk. Not sure what I'm gonna do for deer this year.  The 308 is always ready.  If I can get my newly built 30-06 Ackley to feed I'll take that.   For my extra doe tag I was thinking of taking a Contender 14" in 30-30 Ackley but I need a bigger than 3X scope on it.    If the distance is gonna be under 125 yds for the doe I might take an open sighted 357 Max.    I never killer anything w/ a revolver  -  except a few cats and snakes ;D

Cowboybart, congrats on the speed goat.  It must be nice to have enough guns to use different ones on each animal. It'd make me crazy deciding though, so i just stick to the same gun for everything.

DPHunter, How long of a shot are you planning on taking?  Where are you hunting at?
