When Hog hunting, I use either a 30-06 with 150GR Core-Lokts or with 180GR Core-Lokts or I use a 30-30 with 170GR Silver Tips or 170GR Power Points.  However, when out with a shotgun, I carry a couple of 12GA Rifled Slugs in my pocket along with a couple of #4 Buckshot Shells in case I run across a hog.  Overall, I prefer the 30-06 with 180GR Core Lokts.

I've used a lot of different cartridges, but the best one hands down is the .375 H&H with 300 grain Noslers.

Remember, hogs have this thing about coming back to life after you shoot them.  Don't have that problem with the .375 H&H.

For busting thru the palmettos after them, I like my Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in .45/70. I put a Williams peep on the rear and a Firesight bead up front. Very quick sighti picture. For longer shots or across fields, I take a Ruger M77 All Weather in .350 Remington Mag. topped with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x12x40 scope. Either will put them down in thier tracks, with proper bullet placement, of course.

Well, lets see. An Ar15 in 223, a Model 94 Winchester in 3030, a Model 92 Winchester in 357, and a 12 guage slug. Have used a 4570 just for fun, but sold it. They aren't that tuft to kill.
In the 223 I use a 52 grain match hollow point by blackhills, the 3030 I reload a remington 150 grain jsp at 2425fps, and the 357mag rifle a 158 grain jsp at 1900fps. Killed a 350lb+ boar last year with the 223. Slipped up on him while he was sleeping under a cedar. He didn't even try to get up. One shot and that was all. The 3030 is the best with the 357mag rifle a close second, I think. Not to much gun, but yet plenty for even the biggest ones.

When we shoot hogs as we usually knife them with the dogs we use a .243, .270. 30-30, or .308. All will stop em in their tracks with a good shot in the ear hole.

.243 with a Nosler Spire Point. I have taken a couple with perfect broadside shots. Both didn't take a step! fell right over in their tracks. I think its mostly shot placement that does the trick.....

30/30 G2 Contender has gotten the nod most recently for a few porkers and puts 'em down quick. I don't like to track e'm far.

Though not a long gun, I like the 12" 44 mag. on my Encore better for close in action!

Don't know if it is my favorite yet, But I know what I will be using. I bought a Model 1895
Steyr carbine in 8x56R. It is a straight pull bolt action and is about the most handy little rifle I have ever held. I just found some 203 grain softpoint ammo for it and I am going to at least have to take it a couple of times. Got a bunch of FMJ military stuff for practice.. It shoots accurately and Kicks like a mule. Normally it is a model 94 winchester in .30-30 or my Marlin in .35 Rem. Not really a whole lot of need for more.

.45-70, .35 Whelen, or 12 Ga. slug, I've used all. All resulted in instant "stiff leg quiver"

my pig gun at the moment is particularly hidious SMLE .303,,ugly as the pigs and tougher,,,but in future I think I'll do like the Euro's after those big Rooshan boars,,,short 12 ga. with Brenneke slugs in the thick stuff,,,more knock down when the action get close and fast,,,the .303 with 180's will do at distance :D

Favorite and best hog rifles are different in my case. Last year I bought a Browning BLR in 358 with hog hunting in mind. I usually sneak up on feeders after dark and want some thump for it. Most shots are 30 yards or so and it's 250 grain Speer's at 2200 fps are surely up to the task but as yet I haven't used it on a hog. My favorite is my 7x57 loaded with 160 grain Hotcors pushed to 2600 fps. This rifle kills a couple of hogs every year. I just happened to have a round chambered loaded with the Sierra 160 grain Gameking when I killed my biggest hog ever last year, a bruiser over 400 pounds. Hit high shoulder at 30 yards he dropped on the spot.

Well my first choice is my M94 trapper in .45colt 300grn bullets just plain hurt. for longer shots I drag out my SMLE yeah there are newer better guns out there but the SMLE just has that feel to her that says you mean busyness.

The few wild boar I have killed (175-290 lbs) were with a .270 Winchester with handloaded 130 grain Nosler Partition bullets at about 3,050 fps. All  were one shot kills in the coastal plains,  rolling hill country of Central California.  This has been my pet mule deer load for more than 30 years.  Actually, as it turns out, it's just about my pet everything load.

In one boar hunting camp at the end of  the day, a bunch of guys were telling war stories about near death experiences with charging hogs.  The guide was an experienced hunter and rancher who'd lived in this area his entire life.  I asked him about these war stories and said how could I have made so many one shot kills with my pet mule deer load in a feeble .270 in light of all the near death experiences of these other guys?  He just rolled his eyes and shrugged.

Later, when we were riding in his pick up alone, he admitted he'd had a few scary experiences while getting up close and finishing off wounded hogs with his .357 magnum pistol after they had been wounded by poor shooting clients.  He said most of their stories were "bullsh*t.  If you use proper loads in an adequate caliber, (i.e. .270 or bigger)  and you can shoot, you'll be ok.  He said the .243 is not enough gun for wild bore and he had had bad experiences with it.  His personal rifle was a .270, but that he had seen great results with the .338 Win Mag  and that he was impressed with the 8mm Mauser. The important thing was good shooting.

I agree a larger bore rifle would be more appropriate for the really big ones in thick cover. One of my boars was heart shot and he took off running for about 85 yards before dropping dead.         I guess I was lucky he ran away from me instead of toward me. I might have been  killed armed, as I was, with nothing more powerful than my  feeble .270.

35 Whelen is rapidly becoming mine. Shot these the other day, no limit, no closed season here, and the farmers consider them vermin. All these were running when shot, and all dropped instantly.

Where is "here"?

What kind of .35 do you have?  What are your loads?

I got a savage 110 that I rebarreled with the Adams & Bennet barell change kit from midway, it was originally 30/06. I have shot Nosler Ballistic tips (225 grns) in the past, did not like thier penetration, now I shoot Hornady 250 grn RN or spire points, loaded with Reloader 15 to 2600 fps, thats what I shot these with, and they are like a death ray. I am in Tn on the cumberland Platuea.
