Feed ramp on a Model 7 Rem question
« on: September 06, 2006, 02:53:33 PM »
I am preparing to send my Model 7 in 7/08 to Douglas Barrels Inc. to have a 22" #1 contour barrel mounted in 6MM Remington. I thought about a 6BR for some time but the feeding problems resulting in possibly making my 7 into a singleshot scared me. I have decided on a 6MM Rem as it was my late Daddy's favorite cartrige though he never owned one. What kind of feeding problems will I encounter with the 6MM Rem using the 7/08 slide? Also I like the Remington 673 Laminated stock and if that will be a problem inletting the Douglas contour I would like to know before I order one from Remington.
Thanks, Doug

I seriously doubt the 673 stock will fit. If a laminated stock your wish I would reccomend ElkRidge or the Midway stocks. I prefer the shape of the ElkRidge as they allow a bit more wood for me to shape as I wish.. A 6mm Rem is a bit longer than the 7-08 round and a 243 would have been the easiest swap. The M7 you're refering to is the short coupled bolt and it should be possible to alter the mag box slightly to make it feed OK. Remember these rifles use stamped sheet metal box magazines and they are readily available from sources such as Brownells. The difference is length is on the order of around 4mm or so.. The slightly longer 6mm may want to jam into the ramp before the magazine lips release.. Just ry and see how it works first.. I bought one of the M7's in 7-08 for conversion to a mannlicher stocked rifle. The ones Remington produces are just a bit too pricey.. If the thing won't shoot it may get rebarreled to the new 338 Federal. If it shoots ok I've a M98 that will get the new tube..

Gunnut, I have to say I was a little surprised by your info you gave me.You said you don't think the stock for a Reminton 673 will not fit my Model 7 Remington? Are you aware they both share the same action? I like the Laminated stock reminicent of the old 600 Magnum.
I also have to question your thoughts on why a 6MM Rem cartige will not work in a Model 7 action. I remember well when these beautiful rifles came out they were offered in 6MM Remington. You stated that the 6mm was longer than the 7/08 and may require a longer magazine box yet most load books list both cartriges max OAL at 2.80  to 2.825 inches.  My only concern was the feed ramp or slide up top of the magazine spring may need altering since the 7/08 is derived from the .308 Win.  I don't think Remington sells one for the 6MM.

First please read my reply a bit better. I said the 6mm would caause a few more problems as it's longer. Perhaps not in overall length but in length from base to shoulder and big green uses sheet metal magazines. Formed to release the round progressively. If the round hits the feed ramp before it's released it'll have a problem. Can be minor or major, depending on tolerances.. The 243 is a direct swap. Now as far as the stock swap, I don't really know if the actions are the same but the barrel channel is not. It is possible to cut out the channel for a larger barrel but the contour you mention is smaller than the Magnum' contour remington put into the 673 stock.. There are several factors involved in putting a barreled action into a stock.. Perhaps a laminate stock from ElkRidge or Wenigs might suit your taste and have a suitable barrel channel.. As I mentioned in the initial reply, try it first it may well feed. If not it should prove an easy fix.. Hope I've clarified my reply for you.

Gunnut,
I am a bit cooler now and did reread your first reply. I checked with Remington and the feed ramp and mag are "universal" to both the 7/08 and previously offered 6MM Rem.  As for the stock it will fit as they both use the Seven action  and since the Model 673 uses a heavier barrel it should accomondate the larger barrel I intend to use. I want a little more forward weight fot pointability. Accept my opology for my hastey primary response and keep me informed as to how your "project" 7 is going.
