122 Gr. Wolf For Deer?
« on: September 07, 2006, 07:09:13 AM »
Of course, I'm speaking of the 7.62x39, in the lighter hp round.  I've looked and called all over for the heavier soft point w/o luck.

I'm assuming you are talking about the hollow points. I would test fire some into jug of jello and check for expansion. The hole in the point is very small. I definitely would not use the ball ammo.

They appear to be in stock at Cheaper Than Dirt (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM636-47831-257.html).

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The 154gr soft points appear to be in stock.

The 122 Grain Hollow Points do work pretty good for deer. I have taken a few deer with them. I'll give you a little advice on the 7.62x39MM for deer (AIM FOR THE SHOULDER BONE) preferably a ittle high. I tried a lot of different loads for the 7.62x39 on deer and none of them ever expanded well at all. If the deer was hit in the heart lung area but no shoulder bone was incountered it would run for a LONG while with just a little hole going straight through. BUT if you take out the shoulder blade on the high side the deer isn't going anywhere. A shoulder shot with an 06 or any othr popular hunting round usually does severe damage and spoils a lot of meat BUT not so with the 7.62x39 122 hollow points.

I used that round a couple years back and had success with it.  I took a nice buck (5 pointer) at about 40 yards.  Just put your shot into the shoulder.  Mine dropped right there, however, at about 30 minutes later when I approached the deer was still alive, I broke the shoulder. A second shot from my .357 mag. handgun put it out of it misery.
