The older A.S.M.-made EMF's (long)
« on: September 07, 2006, 01:11:37 PM »
About 11-12 years ago I bought an EMF "Hartford Model" in .45 Colt.  Had some trouble with it from the start and had to send it back.  First, the wrong hammer had been installed.  It was one from their "Dakota" models and evidently had no safety notch (checkering was ugly, too).  I got it back, shot it and then noticed that the barrel had abundant tool marks and leaded TERRIBLY.  And the action was always rough. I didn't know my way around the lockwork then and didn't want to fool with trying to send it back again.  I just quit shooting it and it has sat in the rear of the safe for 10 years.

Since then, I've learned a lot about tuning and timing S.A.A.'s and I've decided to revive that revolver. I was considering trying to lap the barrel and disassembled it fully for the first time and was appalled at the lockwork.  I don't know if it came that way from the factory or from EMF's repair people in California, but whoever timed it with the new hammer really filed the H*** out of the hand.  He even peened the sides with a chisel to stretch it.  It looks like someone tried to make a hand out of a chunk of steel, a hacksaw, a chisel, and a dull file.  Also, the left bolt leg is too short, and the hammer cam is chewed up (fortunately, it is a separate replaceble cam--some repros have fixed cams on the hammers).  Those parts are so rough they've just been chewing each other up.  Rather than trying to work on those boogered up parts, I'd rather replace much of the lockworks and tune it up from there.  But my revolver was made by A.S.M. which, I understand, is no longer in business.  According to EMF's advertising back then, all Hartford Model parts were interchangeable with the original Colts.  Are they making that claim with their Uberti-produced products too?  Will a Uberti barrel, bolt, hammer cam and hand work?

Back in the mid 90s or thereabout, I bought a "Cimarron" thinking I was getting the best at the time.  Turns out, they were using ASM pistols.  My hammer broke the half-cock notch merely by repeated cocking after a year or so and I called Cimarron and they informed me my pistol was an ASM and that they no longer stocked parts for it.  I ordered a hammer from someone else and installed it.  Within a few months the half-cock notch broke again with nothing more strenuous than normal cocking for firing.  This time, it holds on half-cock but the trigger can be pulled and the hammer will fall.  It appears there is something in the frame, a bur or extrusion that is stressing the half-cock notch, but darned if I can find it.  Other than that, the fit and finish is tops and it shoots rather well.

All of this means nothing for your question, but I'd look for some replacement parts from VTI or gunpartscorp and give them a try.  You have nothing to lose and they won't be that expensive.

Thanks for sharing your experiences as well.  I tried VTI. Their prices are fantastic for Uberti parts, but I couldn't find ASM parts.  When you installed your replacement hammer, was it from another manufacturer?  I would rather just use Uberti parts-----if they will work with minor fitting.  I'm worried about ASM parts not being properly heat-treated anyway.  I wonder if your problem with your hammer was with the trigger?  Perhaps the sear was too thick and was creating a wedge effect with the half-cock notch, breaking it off.  Just a thought.

Not being a SAA mechanic, I didn't know what caused it, but I know it wasn't right.  In the mean time, I haven't shot it much but intend to start working up a 777 load it likes (it's a .44 special) and filing the sights to match the point of impact.  It's a good grouper.

Did you try gunpartscorp for ASM parts?

Yeah, I tried them----no luck.  I ended up purchasing some Uberti parts.  I haven't tried fitting them yet, but I'll let everyone know if they worked.
