big coyotes in OK?
« on: September 07, 2006, 05:49:11 PM »
Uh, all of the pictures on the internet that I see of coyotes are little bitty animals.  Do we just have big coyotes in SE Oklahoma/North Texas?  Or are they coydogs are something?  I saw some big coyotes in the Texas Hill Country back in better days so are they just like any other animal and have regional variation?  The predator hunter pictures that I see on the internet are.....cocker spaniel/miniature schnauzer sized.  What I see in the fields around here are maybe not German Shepherd sized, but they are big.  Just curious what everyone else sees.

I don't know what you have there, generally the colder the winters are the bigger the Coyotes are.  Larry

Hard to say without actually seeing them...We have some pretty big coyotes...and even larger coy-dogs around these parts..

Yoties vary in size even around my parts(just 40 miles north of OK) from small ones size of a coonhound to as large as German Shepard but mostly there around 40lbs-60lbs dogs for the most part.

I think it really depends on what they have to eat and how much. I've shot several yoties around here that had bad mainge and were very small (guessing do to the sickness) this has been more common as of the past few years.

As for Texas yoties I haven't a clue I don't get that far south to shoot dogs down there.

Most all the coyotes I've seen East, West, North & South Texas have been in the 40-60 lb range. A lot of them here have the mainge real bad, not that anyone cares. They eventually get sick and die from it. Saw one on my East Texas deer lease the other day that would have been a healthy 60 lbs but he was a sick pitiful looking 40 lbs or less. I was taking my NEF .17 HMR with a new scope over to the stand to sight in or I woluld have plugged him. As it turned out the scope was dead on at 100 yrds about 4 inches low without adjustments so I could have at least hit him.
