Old H&R locks up differently?
« on: September 07, 2006, 06:06:22 PM »
Just got out my ancient H&R 16 gauge to shoot some Grouse tomorrow.  When I looked at it's lockup, I can see about .003 gap in front of the breach.  The barrel locks up tight, looks like it locks against the bottom of the frame, not against the breach like the current Handi's do.  The latch is only half way up the latch shelf.  I've shot this thing a thousand times like this, so the gap works fine, I have just not seen a new handi lock up tight and have a visable gap, kind of wondered if they had changed how they want the latchup to work in the last 50 or 60 years. I'll throw in the number one buck loads also, could run into a Bear or Cougar, now that would be some real fun.   Larry

Larry i had an old h&r shikari 45/70 never did have to slam it shut just closed it gentle  and allways got full lock up when i compaird it to the buff classick the quality control was a lot beter on that shikari than the buff classic or outher  new hadi's i have seen. i do think marlin has let the qualty slip a bit compaird to the old h&r co just my opinion. but i still love my buff classic, thats the fun of having one you can just about fix anything yourself.

I think the quality started to slip when the old H&R company went bankrupt.  Some of the employees bought the rights and patents and started up a new company called NEF.  It seems at that time there was some design changes and quality started to slip.  I'm hoping that Marlin will start to bring the quality control up a notch or two.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I think they have brought it up several notches from where they were just 2 years ago...They may still have a few problems..but..the overall quality has improved greatly from what it was at that time.I think if they ever get some forward thinking people at Marlin (who controls NEF)...things could even become better..One can only hope
