I looked at J-B weld and found it had less compressive strength than the Devcon Steel Putty. The putty has only a minimal amount of resin and 90 % solids the amount of hardner is 2.5 : 1  it develops 8500 psi when cured. It does not stick very well on its own and requires a primer.

I tried gluing steel shims into the hinge pin seat with J-B weld, but they came loose and fell out?

The effective bearing aria of about 0.15sq/in of the hinge pin seat takes the brunt of the whole 7500 lbs back trust less in smaller cartridges. So the math says 8500 psi wont last forever. Even at halve the back trust it will take a beating. But a refix is easy enough.

You can buy tungsten powder from Brownell and mix your own putty, but like Devcon the resin is the weak link. With really thin resin like 51CURE it get very hard.

Since the amount of putty is so thin under the pin, I don't see how it can squeese out on the sides after it is cured. I feel the under lieing steel is what gives away? That is what is causing the trouble in the first place.

The triangular 1/2" group is the one with oil on the shelve. That 6x47 is an incredible shooter when all things are tight.

Fred~  JB Weld and JB Stik are 2 different things, the Stik has a compressive strength of 10-14,000 psi....

The shim on the .270 Ultracomp barrel that I fitted didn't pop loose yet, it's still firmly attached, but it's only got less than a box of ammo thru it, but wasn't just fitted to a normal hinge seat either. The hinge seat had been filed out and was way over size and no longer round, so there's more epoxy behind the shim than if a shim was just fitted to a normal hinge seat. It will probably fail sooner or later, tho...I'll find out when I work up a handload for it!!

Fred~ I got mine at the local Ace Hardware shop.  I liked it because it's cheap, easy to work with, should be easy to find, and it works. Good luck.

You know, I sold it a while back to somebody around here, (denden???) since I decided I had too many varmint calibers.  I went on a minimizing spree and got rid of it... :'(  Maybe he'll chime in

I believe I am the "mistery e-mailer" that you refer to.  Just registered so I could respond.  I have a heavy barrel NEF 223 that I bought to shoot coyotes off of the tractor during corn picking. 
If the lock up shelf is left dry on "my rifle" it will give about 8" vertical stringing.  The shelf must be lubed to prevent this.  Maybe it is not as smooth as it should be.  The lock up engagement is less than half of the shelf.  This is one of the last of the slow twist ejectors rifles.  It has never poped open or failed to eject with authority.  I really like this little rifle but it can drive you nuts trying to get it to group the same each time out.  Perhaps my latch spring is a bit weak?

Well bless your heart. Glad you could chime in. We been having quite discussion on the OIL ON THE SHELVE subject. Welcome to the GB Handi Forum.

I think for myselve I agree with the oily shelve,  together with a few others. You saw the two targets I shot yesterday. It may not work for others but it sure wont do any harm, me thinks.
