Best Red Dot Scope?
« on: September 08, 2006, 03:53:40 PM »
I am planning on putting a red dot scope on my .44 mag. Super Blackhawk Hunter.  I was going to put a Aimpoint 9000SC on it until I found out they needs 2" between the rings and with the Blackhawk Hunter there is only about 1 7/8.  Since I am a machinist I could take the rings into work and take 1/16 off each ring to make the Aimpoint fit.  The other option would be to get something else.  The Ultra Dots don't look too bad and I've heard good things about them on here but I can't believe they can be as good as an Aimpoint when they are a fraction of the price.  Are Aimpoints much better then anything else or are the way overpriced.  I hunt in Minnesota and temps somethings get around 0° F and need a sight that will work down to that temp.  Aimpoints website says they have an operating range down to -20° F but Ultra Dot doesn't give an operating range.  Has anyone used on around 0°F?  The Leupold/Gilmore sights look good also but they say you need 4 rings with a .44 so that rules them out.  Should I go with the Aimpoint or something else?

Hello
I bought a Aimpoint 9000SC four weeks ago,and put it on top of my Smith 29.
So far I have shoot a couple of hudred rounds with it,and it`s fast and accurate. My Aimpoint have the 2moa dot, that makes it easy
to shoot accurate out to 100 yards.I like it a lot :)
I lives near The Artic Cirkle  in Norway, and here the Aimpoint is very popular on all kinds of hunting weapons.During the autum/winter
the temperature goes far below the freezingpoint, but its not a problem for the Aimpoint.I`ll think the hunter gives up before the Aimpoint!
(sorry for my bad writing-my english is a bit rusty :-[)

One other option , you can get Ruger to Weaver mounts and then it would open up a bunch of options . I had the same problems you are dealing with when I wanted to put red dot scopes on my Redhawk and Blackhawk Hunter . I really like the mount I got from Weigand Combat , you might want to take a look at them .

Just because the Ultra Dot does not cost as much as the Aim point, don't count them out. I have 3 of them. Two are on 460 Mags and one is on a 500 Mag with over 3000 rounds fired. I use and recommend the Ultra-dot Match- dot.  ;D

I've asked this before with no answer. What is the difference between the AimPoint and the Holo Sight, and is one better than the other? Thanks.

aimpoint is my choice !   for the best , i have owned approx 35 or so red dots and currently have over  20 . the leupold is not parralex free dispite what they say i owned one , called the factory , and sold it soon, the ultra dot is excellent, and a lifetime warentee ,but the field of view is smaller than most makes in the 1 inch or the 30mm size.  stay away from sights that automaticly adj the brightness of the dot , i tried 4 different makes of miniture sights and there all the same the dot is to bright for accurate shooting,  also stay away from multipul reticles ! something else to go wrong and at ranges past 25 yards they dont allways track correctly when changing reticules or dot sizes i have perhaps 10 scopes with this option some are ok and some are not.

I decided to go with the Aimpoint and will probably use the Weigand Combat mount.

I had bad luck with Millet red-dots on any thing over the 41 Mag. I have blown out 3 of them. One on my Ruger Redhawk in 44 Mag one with my 500 Mag and one with my Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. I talked to Millet and they told me not to use them one anything over the 44 Mag. Just my experience.

The Bushnell Holoscope sits atop my .44 Mag. Anaconda and I just love it.

Redhawk1,

The 500 is a rifle case used in a pistol and too strong for my tastes - maybe when I get man enough.

I bought my millett at Sportsman's warehouse.  I asked if they guarenteed it as I was putting it on a 454.  They said they would.  I thought, "O K fellas, see you in a couple of weeks" - then shot the snot out of the revolver with factory 300 grain loads pounding the cases out with a wooden mallet.  (pistol is at ruger factory at this time)

Well, revolver is getting repaired, and scope is still working.  As Idaho allows no electronics in the scopes of the hunters, I will be hunting it with iron sights, but my Millit scope works just fine.

C F

Out of curiosity, what broke on your scopes?

I blew out the red-dot's. It would not illuminate at all. Also one had the intensity knob break loose and the insides were loose. I spoke with Millet and they told me they do not recommend them on anything over a 44 Mag.

I got a Millet 1" tube red-dot for cheap, so I threw it on my SuperBlackhawk .44 magnum and shot about 150 handloads through it this weekend at the cabin.  It held it's zero just fine and didn't break or anything.  I am more suprised that my Weaver base actually stood up to the recoil without any issues, since I have the non-hunter model Blackhawk, and the base has that weird attachment that slides over the barrel and clamps down.

I use Millet, Doctor, Bushnell and  UltraDot.  Use on 22lr, pellet guns, 1911-45acp, 9mm target, 357 PPC revolver, 44 mag boomers.

If I was going to red dot another large caliber I would go with the Ultra Dot.  This is the best bang for the buck, no paralex trouble and a lifetime warrantee that is honored in the USA.

I have used a Millet on a Super RedHawk in 44 Mag.  First one lasted one day and a cracked lens.  Sent back and got a new one with no hassle and it is still working on the same gun more than 2 years later.

All that said I will be using a Leupold 2x on my 657 PC Hunter this year.

I have 2 Tasco PDP3SP's  and Love them, granted they are only on .22LR's but I had one of them on my 7x30 Water's for a while and it was awsome for quick aim.   ;D

I am really itching to try the new Mueller Multi-Shot, and also there new Quick Shot Archery Scope looks like the Holosights.  Has anyone heard anything good or bad about them yet?  They seem to be very competitively priced on there red dots and red dot or spot dot scopes.  www.muelleroptics.com

The PDP 3's withstand the rigors and recoil of IPSC. There were companies that "bullet proofed" them. I'm not sure about the current production scopes, but the old ones were great. Ive had the Aimpoints, Bushnell Holosights, and have had great luck with them. The C-more slide-ride would be another great choice.

It doesn't seem that a 1 1/2 " click at 50 yards is all that good

I have had a leupold Gilmore 2MOA ret dot on my super redhawk for several years and hundreds of punishing rounds and it still work like the day I boaught it. The combo is deadly out to 75+ yards.

good shooting,
Brian
