Back from Hunt's Bowhunting Ranch - Red Stag - Texas
« on: September 09, 2006, 07:49:25 AM »
Well, after years of wanting to go somewhere & hunt something (& the recent realization that with my son's fall football schedule I wouldn't be taking a week to go out west for the next 10 years or so) I finally decided to hunt Red Stag in Texas at Hunt's Bowhunting Ranch.  We had a great time - we'll definitely go back (my son thinks we need to do it every Labor day weekend).  Only had 2 days, but we hunted 4 times and had exactly 1 shot at one deer - fortunately it was a nice, heavy 6 X 7 stag and it all worked out well (I'll post a picture when I have more time).

My biggest fear was that I'd get down there & all of the animals would be just standing around waiting for an arrow.   And some of the goats and rams basically do.  But the Sika, Fallow & Red Deer as well as the Blackbuck & Aoudad were all very easily spooked & wild.  We tried a couple of stalks on some fallow does - and it was just like hunting whitetails - they spot you @ 100 yards & they're gone.    It was really cool.  Glad I tried exotics again.  I'd have no desire to hunt any of the goats or less than wild rams (probably better for beginners), but the deer were a lot of fun to hunt - got an early start for deer season this year.

Hunting Blackbuck has been the most challenging for me so far. If they are in an open field they spot you at over 400 yards and are gone. If you have cover and can get close enough to get a shot you have only seconds to setup and get the shot. Good eating though. If my wife had her way I would only hunt Axis and
Blackbuck.

Every Labor Day weekend sounds reasonable to me.  :)

It may take me a little bit to post that picture - it can be seen at  - http://www.bowsite.com/bowsite/tf/bgforums/thread.cfm?forum=17&threadid=326477&MESSAGES=34&FF=17 - in the mean time.

Yes the blackbuck were a lot of fun to watch.  Talk about a wild, spooky animal.  They could see you from a very long way off and they'd pogo the heck out of there.

Good for you guys!!!!  I'm glad you had a good experience.  You're right about some sheep though.  I once asked my TX guide, Ken Wilson of Sportsman-on-Film, what it would be like to hunt Texas dall on big ranches and he replied it was less a hunt and more an assassination!!!!

If you like, please enjoy some of my hunt pics at:
