The hinge pin is like the lord, he is always there even if you don' see him. So the bible says.

In the bottom picture you can actually see the hinge pin, if you look good.

The pictures are even worse after the GB progam sizes them. Well that cheap didgi leaves much to be desired too.

Tim, I dig out a URL about cleaning the 17 and some stuff they used in the bore, Don't remember where it is but it is burried in my computer somewhere.

On Monday I am going to shoot the gun, fire 10 and clean,  three repetitions.
Too bad but my bore scope does not fit into a 17 bore.

I been bussy making goose loads, goose season is open today, be going in a couple of weeks supposed to snow next Friday dowm to 33F.

Mine are never very dirty, the .17hmr doesn't seem to copper foul like jacketed centerfires.

Good luck on the goose hunting, I've never shot em, have eaten one once, the first and last time!!

Here is a target after 3x 15rounds shoot and clean with Eliminater and J-B paste.
The barrel is broke in now and shoots very good. 3/4" vertical group at 100 yards.
Not too bad, different ammo may reduce the stringing. I used Remingtons with 17gr V-max bullets.

I am not used to a 45oz trigger, you have to hold the rifle solid or you pull shots. Looks like this rifle has found a home.

Nice gun Fred! I like the .17 HMR, but most are bolt actions, which aren't as appealing asthetically as your Low Wall.

Just found this old thread.

The Winchester low wall is a very sleek rifle. I've been lusting for an example in .223 for some time.

As I understand it, a few examples were manufactured either by Winchester or Browning,... I can't recall right now, but when they're found they draw a fairly heavy price. Still,... I might have to buy the next one that pops up.

Very pretty rifle, Fred.

Fazak,
1885's in .223 are pretty regular at the various internet auction sites. I see them on Gun Broker, Auction Arms, and Guns America quite often. You're right about the prices being a little up there, but not too bad. I see them from $800-$1,300.

Fazak.
The 17HMR is a pretty little low wall. But I would have been more pleased if it was a 223. Though I never had much luck with the two  223 Handi's.

This low wall is in a complete different class than the Handi as far as quality is concerned and very accurate right out of the box.

I only tried the one brand of ammo and a 3/4" group at 100 is pretty good for a rim fire.

I keep my eyes open for a 223 in a Ruger #1 which in my opinion is the better of the two, the Ruger#1 is also a bit less money. Alas not as pretty as the Low Wall with the octagon barrel.

My local Gander Mtn has 1885's in 223 and 22-250 for $799.
I am tempted to use layaway!

Hairtrigger.
Buy it, it is a good deal. I would go for the 223 because it is a lot more pleasant to shoot. The ammo is cheaper, less throat wear, less powder and not all that far behind the 22-250.
