Receiver Scope Mount for Rem. 870
« on: September 09, 2006, 03:56:27 PM »
Do the Receiver mounts for the Rem. 870 work very well? I have a 28" Vent Rib barrel and can put most my shots into a 10" circle off sand bags at 100yds w/ a bead. The problem is that it is about 24" up and left.

I have moved from a thick wooded area where I didn't even need to aim with the shotgun, or used my Smith 629 and was very succesful. Now I live where I have the possibility of 100 yd shots. I would like to set up my shotgun to backup my pistol for the longer shots.

I cannot justify buying a new rifled barrel right now. I have an extra bushnell 3-9 Ellite 3200 scope that I could use.

Any suggestions? I am worried that the slop between the barrel and receiver would be a major week link.

Thanks,
Jeff

The receiver mounts are just okay, but not great.  Personally, I'd save my pennies for a cantilever barrel.  I have a cantilever barrel and zero rarely moves from season to season.  My brother, for years, used the receiver mount and it seems his zero was never very consistent.  He shot a lot to keep checking the zero.  He finally sold his slug barrel and reciever mount and moved up to a cantilever after getting tired of shooting and zeroing constantly.

Plus, I can pull my cantilever, put on my field barrel, and go bird shooting, then switch back when done.  Personally, I always fire a shot to check the zero but it is usually just about right on.  With the receiver mount, its a whole procedure to put on and take of to use the field barrel and then it has to be totally rezeroed.

My 2 cents.

Make certain that the receiver mount is what they call a saddle mount, that is it goes over both sides of the receiver, not just bolts to one side.  Leupold makes a nice system that seems to work.  Receiver mounts are my last choice after cantilver barrels, or drill and tapping the receiver.

I've scopee two that way using Weaver bases screwed down to the receiver. Both guns shot excellent groups. One was my wive's and had a smooth bore barrel with rifled screw in choke tube. It worked best with the old type slugs and didn't really like the sabot slugs but at 50 yards would stack them on top of each other and at 100 shot about 4". Mine with rifled barrel shot the sabot slugs into 2" or less regularly at 100 yards. So don't let anyone tell you a reciever mounted scope on such a gun will not necessarily be accurate. Both of ours were Remington 870 Express guns. Can't speak to what others might do.

Does anybody know if you can still see the bead over a weaver base on the receiver. If that is possible I think I will have it tapped and ue Warne QR rings. I've had great luck with them on other guns, including my 629.

Thanks,
Jeff
