6.8 Range report
« on: September 10, 2006, 03:03:08 AM »
I finally had a chace to shoot my 23" barrel 6.8, ammo Sliver State 110 Gr. serria pro hunter bullet (factory load) Scope 3x9 Simmons Pro hunter lighted reticile. ( yes cheap scope) sighted in at 54 yrds. one ragged hole. Out to 100 yds. just under 1" ( I am happy but not suprised as all my factory barrels have allways been great shooters) Then due to terrain had to go to 227 yds ( no 200) I shot a 3 shot group on 1" 1/4 ( the best of my life ! ) with a 5 shot total 1" 3/4 Now I am suprised this bugger will shoot ! Drop at 227 yds. is about 6" I bought this barrel for my nephew for deer I feel he is all set. I have some Silver State Barnes TSX 110 Gr. on the way. I am very impressed with silver state ammo ! I am a big fan of the TSX also. I may use this gun for deer myself ::)

MW,

Don't beat up the low priced Simmons pro hunter scope. I put one on my Smith 44 mag 629 and have been shootin mid-range to full house loads for about two years and that scope has never flinched.

Best $100 in a scope I ever spent!

Dave.

Hi Dave That is good to hear !   I have 3 or 4 simmons now but none have been on anything with much recoil so I am glad to hear they can hold up to rougher use.  This is my first lighted reticle scope, very nice in low light.

I have  a 23" barrel for my Contender also..its a tack driver..with factory and handloads..I just wished more of the bolt gun manufacturers would jump on the band wagon..How about a Ruger Compact or Frontier in 6.8??

Hi spinafish    My bolt gun vote would be a CZ 527  in 6.8   I have a 527  in 204 Ruger and it is a real shooter !  ( I guess the 20 ounce set trigger helps at the bench )

Hey everyone,
I have a 6.8mm SPC, but it's a bushmaster M4.  I have only fired 100 factory fmj to break in the barrel and about 10 factory silver state TSX.  I have several batches of handloads ready to go to the range:  Pro-Hunters, Hornady HPBT, and TSX all setting on half grain increments of H335.  I can hardly stand waiting till this weekend to test out some of these loads.
The 6.8mm SPC is an awesome caliber, especially in an AR format.  I'm thinking about a 6.8 pistol barrel for my encore but not for this years hunting season.

If your going to reload try H322 it seems to work the best for me and quite a few others.

I appreciate the advise!  I'll try H322.  I've been looking all over without much luck trying to find some reloading data for the 6.8.  From what I've read many people like the Pro-Hunter rounds the best.

I'm shooting a AR15 with a 16" barrel and my best loads are with sierra 110gr prohunter bullets or 90gr hp both loaded with H322.
I haven't shot a deer yet but they knock the snott out of coyotes.
Hodgdons web site has loading data for the 6.8

How many grains of H322 are you using in your best groups?

I have found THE LOAD for my 23" Contender.  29.5 Accurate 2230,Federal Match Large Rifle primer with the Hornady 100 .277 Soft point.  According to the book, it should be smoking along at 2,620 fps.  3 shots easily covered with a quarter, might have been able to cover with a nickle, but didn't have one ::)

MaineWoods, I e-mailed CZ about the possibility of them chambering the 6.8 in that rifle..the response was he had checked it was not coming in 2007, but maybe in 2008..I would recommend lets them know you are interested..the squeaking wheel gets the grease.at least according to James Taylor  ;D

a quick note for simmons pro hunter scopes.

I use them on every rifle I have (17HMR, 22, 22mag, 223, 243, 270, 280, 308, 30-06, 7MM, 300WM and my 50 cal muzzeloader). Never had one problem with them.

And thanks for the 6.8 report I've been thinking about getting one.
