Hi:

Any opinions on the Winchester .25 WSM ? What do you think the future holds for that caliber?

Do you mean the 25 WSSM? Winchester did not come out with a 25 WSM but instead a super short mag 25. A lot of people however felt like they should have made it a WSM instead of the WSSM. The problem with the 25 wssm is that it really doesn't even outshine the already popular and well established 25-06. Sure it offers 25-06 like performance in a shorter action rifle but is that alone enough to keep it alive? Who knows but my guess is no. Had Winchester developed a 25 WSM instead they could have had a new short action round that would have not only passed the 25-06 in performance but jumped up into 257 Weatherby magnum country. I think it would have had a better chance to survivie among gun enthusiasts. The only short magnum round that seems to have any popular following in my area is the 300 wsm.

The fact that Midway is out of stock of all 25 wssm brass and is not offering any back orders does not mke me feel all warm and fuzzy. I think I got a lefty browning that I'm going to try to move :(

I have no idea about the truth of what I'm saying here. Heard a rumor that the wssm series was developed and patented by Rick Jammison and Winchester swiped it. My brther has a client that is a good friend of Rick's and he said he'd check on it. Rumor is Rick sued Winchester and I understand Rick's not writting anymore. If this is all true, I don't think I'd want one! Right now it's only rumor, I heard it on another site.

even if it's false, I doubt it'll knock off the 25-06. This could be a similar frustration such as the 5mm Rem Mag! Lot of guy's have rifle's, no one has ammo.

The 270 wsm and the 300 wsm will be around for quite some time.
I am not so sure about the other chamberings of wsm and wssm.
Buy up a lot of brass and don't worry, just reload!

Remember the Doo Doo bird? Same thing is in store for it. Twenty years from now folks will look back and say yeah I vaguely recall something about WSMs and WSSMs but can't really remember much about them.

Who said that?

I have to agree with Graybeard in regards to the 25WSSM. I have tried hard to figure out what the 25WSSM had to offer & the only thing I can think of is Black Shadow was very light & a decent kid's gun. But there are alot other rounds & guns that qualify for that. The round does not match the 25-06,
especially with the heavier bullets & for sure it when loaded to equal pressures & both in reloads, the
25-06 beats it bad. I will not miss it when it goes away. In this area, Walmart is closing out their WSSM ammo, selling it dirt cheap. As Todd said earlier, it could have been different if they had chambered a 25WSM, this would have been close to the Roy. I believe all of the WSSM's are toast.
I think all of the SAUM's are done for & as someone already stated, I believe the 300 & 270 WSM's will
survive with the other WSM's in serious doubt. New ammo & New guns are still coming out in the 270 & 300 WSM. We will see.

The reason places keep selling out is that people are buying up supplies of brass.

I saw 8 boxes of factory winchester (black box) .25 WSSM on the shelf yesterday..........

That said, I too, have doubts about the availability in the future.......

I don't know much about the WSSM's, but the 300 WSM will certainly survive.  The 270 probably will also, not sure about the 7mm.  If I were to buy a shoulder fired cannon, I'd probably opt for the 300 WSM over anything else on the market.
