what does any one think of the savage modle 12 vss as a target rifle in 308???

There are better rifles out there; at one heck of a lot more money. Savage makes a good rifle. For the price it's a real good deal.

I will be glad to tell what I know & what I've read & seen & try to make clear the difference.
I've shot Savage sporting (hunting) rifles. groups run under 2in. at 100yd.
I saw one (1) guy with one at our club range.This was the heavy barrel model in .308 . It shot around one (1) in. groups at 100 yd.
I've read they'll do better than 1 in. at 100 yd. One in. at 100 yd. is one (1) minute of angle. In theory 1@100 translates to 6in. @ 600.

All that said;you are a new shooter & shooting 600 yds. is hard,because of the varibles. Wind,mirage,your hold,your trigger squeeze,breathing& sight picture.Also proper use of the sling.
This rifle can shoot better than you can hold since you are just starting. If you were an experianced shooter I would tell you to buy a Mod.70 Heavy barrel Winchester in .308 or .223 without hesitation .
Go shoot NRA Hi-Power with an M-1 at a CMP club & see what 600 is like before you spend money on any rifle. If you really love it get a Mod. 70 & a $300 set of peep sights & go for it.
A good shooter can put 5 shots in a playing card at 500 yds. with a 70 like I mentioned.That is sub-minute of angle. That takes a great rifle & a great shooter.
The Savage probobly will not shoot that good,but starting out you can't either. And it cost 1/2 what the 70 does.When you can shoot better than the rifle, then buy a better rifle. That's what most of us do anyway. Not many can afford a custom built target gun right away so there you go.
I hope I've made some sense to you on this. If I knew you & your capability I could give a more definitive answer.

well that explained some stuff to me , thanks, I shoot a customized 223 100 yards at 1 inch and under groups i use varget, starke 45 grain bullets and my twist is 1in 14, Ive never did any long range shooting and getting into 30 cal is also new, i plan on reloading ( of course) my own 308'sthnks for all the info , like i say im just learning and like all the help and knowledege you guys have and share, im looking at the savage 12vss because like you said i will shoot it and work on getting better then the rifle and then if everthing is going good work into a better rifle, please keep sending info my way on long range shooting,-- again thanks

Check & see if there is a CMP club in your area. Go to their web site & find the list of clubs or e-mail them & ask.
Then you can shoot long range matches with a club rifle & really get a feel for it. CHEAP. Because you can use a club rifle at Hi-Power competitions & practices.You don't have to have much equipment to start.
