NEF stock finish help needed
« on: September 10, 2006, 03:39:03 PM »
My NEF handi rifle is showing some of the finish coming off of the stock in a couple of places.  Any ideas as what would be best to use to fix it up and how to do so that it blends in?

Thanks,

Steve

Hopefully will have a range report soon on the 35 Whelen.  I ended up loading 200 grain Barnes TSX at 57, 57.5, 58, 58.5, 59, 59.5 and 60 grains of RL-15 and Federal 215 primers.  I'll hopefully be able to borrow my friend's chronograph.

I have never had any lock trying to repair this kind of problem...I would suggest you completely refinish the stocks.

get a commercial stripper and remove all remaining finish OR start sanding.  use finer and finer grades until you get to steel wool. Then, with a DAMP cloth, wipe down the stock. this will "WISKER" it. hit it again with the steel wool and again the DAMP cloth. Continue this will finer and finer grades of wool until at least 000 is reached. now stain if you like. For the final finish, I like FORMBYS TUNG OIL as well as LINSPEED OIL. I apply BOTH with my fingers. Rubbing it in until the stock gets warm. Hang it in a DUST FREE environment and wait for it to dry. Give it a couple coats then steel wool it back down almost to wood. you are filling the "pores" in the wood. A couple more coats and you will have the finest finish a handi owner could want!!

OR just lightly sand and shoot with your favorite spray paint and call it done.

 Good luck,

Hunts, Look down in Show me your Handi's, Stimpy has a Handi painted red or
orange, or what ever, need sun glasses to look at it, Realy it does not look bad.
Stimpy had it at the P. Dog shoot in June. Marv.

Mine started peeling on the forearm and where my cheek touches the stock.  I was disappointed.  Used 200 grit and stripped it down.  Took awhile but I was lamed up and had plenty of time to kill.  Sand with the grain.  I stained it with Mahogany Gel Stain from Minwax and sprayed with Spar Poly.  Has held up well and gotten comments from other Handi owners at range.  It is boxed up and waiting on 357 barrel money right now or I would show a pic.

I keep 2 to 3 coats of hand rubbed gun stock oil on mine ... except for the composite stock. Admitedly this makes the stock a little shiny but it protects the finish. When I do get a ding it's usually not through the coating and even if it is I rub some more on that spot to keep it sealed.

Here's one I just finished with Feibing's Med. Brown Leather Dye and Formby's Satin Tung Oil Finish.

It started out as a factory flat black finished stock.

Total investment in this beater was $75.00.

I don't use sandpaper.

I second Swampmans suggestion.  I used a alcohol based walnut mixed with Cherry stain on my Handi after sanding.  The Formby's satin tung oil works very well.  I hand rubbed in about 8 coats....looks great.  Have used the Formby's on two muzzle loaders and an  06 that I purchased.  Keep in mind it does not have any protection against the sun so if you leave it out it might fade.....If you want a finish with UV protection use Watco's Tung or Teak Oil and hand rub it in....Teak Oil takes several days to dry between coats.
