How to clean a single six?
« on: September 11, 2006, 10:00:24 AM »
How do you clean a single six without eroding the muzzle with the cleaning rod?

I would think that eventually the rod would wear the muzzle?  Do they make muzzle guards that small?

Thanks

Greg

I spray mine down good with WD-40 and wipe it off.  .22 ammo is non-corrosive.  I might clean the barrel once a year, by pushing one patch down it with Hoppes #9 and then a dry one.

Use could always use a cleaning rod made of something besides aluminum if you were worried about wear.
I've seen flexible ones, ones made of wood, ect.
I use an alumninum cleaning rod on mine the last few times I shot it and was just careful.
My 22 ruger barrel doesn't take much time and effort to clean, So I doubt if I'd notice the barrel wearing out in my lifetime if I miss once in awhile.

I use a coated "Klean-Bore" rod on all my handguns. You can also use a bore guide made for the muzzle that's brass, and shaped like a cone.

Some suggestions from a new member:
1. Hoppe's Boresnake.  Comes in all calibers, pistol and rifle.
2. Carbon fiber, coated, or aluminum rods should be more gentle on the muzzle than stainless steel.  They can pick up grit, so should be wiped off frequently.
3. For really dirty bores, Outers Foulout cleaning system.  Can't imagine a .22 needing something this serious.

You might clean in normal with a patch and make sure there is no leading.  When I shot Rem Thunderbolts I got a ton of leading.  Switch to coated CCIs and I don't have that problem.  Accuracy was shot when the bore leaded up.  Needed a brass brush.

Maybe the forcing cone is rough or the cylinder is slightly mis-aligned on my Single-Six and that's why I get the leading.  Might not be a problem in a differnent gun.  The gun is accurate for me when it's clean and there is no leading for the CCIs so I'm happy.  I just can't use the real cheap shells.

Steel rods are actually easier on a gun than soft metals or wood.

I like Parker Hale and Dewey plastic coated rods. I like them for centerfire guns, but they are even more important for .22 rimfire guns.

most people I know and have talked to dont clean 22 barrels all that often.. In fact I dont clean my single six until it gets difficult to load.  Then just one pass down the barrel with Hoppes then a dry patch.  Sometimes I dont even clean the barrel.  Heck in my MKII i dont think I cleaned the barrel in several thousands of rounds and it still is a tack driver.  More 22s are ruined from over-cleaning than shooting.
