30/06 shooting 220gr bullets
« on: September 11, 2006, 11:22:33 AM »
I just loaded up some with IMR4350 to 2530fps. I have a 25" barrel.
Does anybody shoot these for hunting in the 30/06 or for fun?

I have shot them out of my 300 Win Mag at 2650 fps before and at 100 yds I shot a three shot group that was touching so I thought maybe some one would have tried them out in a 30/06.

I once loaded a bunch of Hornady 220's in preparation for a (black)bear hunt that didn't happen.  I just looked back in my records.  The load came from the Hornady manual:  53.5 grs. of IMR4831 (a bit below listed max) in Winchester brass with standard Winchester primers.  Didn't yet have a chronogaph.  The manual suggests that load to be somewhere between 2400 and 2500 fps in a 22" barrel.  As I recall, accuracy was fair (two inches or so) in my Ruger 77/'06, but not earthshaking.  Guess I figured it was within "one minute of bear" (grin).

I used to load 55 grs. of rl-22 with the hornady 220 rn. I shot one deer with it. Bang flop. Good load.

I'll bet those 220s were really moving with 55gr of rl25. Probably about 2650 or 2700fps

Years ago (don't ask how many...) I was stuffing 220s over 53 gns of 4895 for about 2500'/sec from my old M17.  I used them for big bear and they worked well, but shot through.  The heavy weights in the 30 bore really carry.  Mikey.

 Mikey,

I'm gonna try these out real soon maybe Monday. I'll see if they go threw some 2x4s. 2 or 3.
That way I'll know how much they can take.

Years ago I shot up a toilet with 220 grain Hornady RN's loaded with H4831.  Perfect bullet for the job.

I went to the range today and shot some of those 220ge Hornady R.N. bullets. With a load of
53.5grs of IMR4350 those bullets did 2486 FPS out of a 25" barrel. My self I thought they

would go faster then that but they did make a 1/2" hole at 75yds and 5 of them went threw it.  So then I tried the 2x4s and they went threw 2 of them no problem. The bullet did open up to 1/2"

coming out of the 2x4 at least the hole was 1/2" where the bullet came out. Bullet was long gone.

JRO , this year my backup rifle is a ruger M77 ultra light , i have been shooting the Hornady 220 RN in three rifles over the last year in front of 54.0 of IMR4831  they shoot well in my rem 700 & 760 but are super accurate in the Ruger.
