TC Renegade flint

I have an old TC Renegade .54 I put together as a kit, oh, back about 1982-3.  I never was fond of the short barrel or the short stock; nor the shotgun buttplate.

So, I did some operation on teh stock and tried to make it look like an old Northwest gun.  I had intentions, if the stock came out alright to modify the buttplate and make it look like a crescent shape and get a longer barrel, roundball of course.

Anyway, to the crux of the matter.  This lock absolutely destroys flints.  I am not really a seasoned flint shooter, so it could be all me.  I bought another frizzen spring and really lightened it, but it don't help much.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to tune the TC flintlock?

T/C has rdesign there hammers a little taller thisway the flints strike higger on the frizzen plate: They also improved on there vent liners,the old ones with the screw diver slot the newer ones come with an allen key.I myself have switch frizzens from a lyman to fit a t/c lock.
I would also say goodby to t/c flints and go with tom fuller black english flints,I would think RB will give you the details when he reads the post.
I would send my lock back to t/c for a new improve hammer
I my self have an early renegade flinter from the earlu 70's that shoots great 95 grains of goex a wad under the patch ball,also built from a kit

Lonewolf said it...sounds like you have the old style lock, reknown for eating flints due to the hammer being too short...their redesigned locks are 100% reliable with long flint life...50-100 shots using 3/4" (x 7/8") Tom Fuller handk knapped black English flints.

Thanks, didn't realize TC flints were "renowned" for this, but mine sure did it.  Not many people around here shoot traditional(hesitate to say "real" as I might offend someone) black powder poles so I'm kinda on me own around these parts.
