« on: September 15, 2006, 06:14:07 AM »
Not Handgun stuff but interesting !
Driving between LaGrange Georgia and Newnan Georgia on Interstate
85, Someone hits a deer. Spun it around in the road and the deer Staggers off the Highway
and into the Pines. Car keeps going.. Young Guy in a pickup truck who saw the deer get hit slams on his brakes, gets out and runs after it. Brief Tussle ensues and he Kills the deer with a large folding Knife. Drags it out and throws it in the back of his truck. Waves to all us shocked Rubber-necker's..
And drives away ! Did That Boy have some Brass Orbs or what! That is one Car struck deer that apparently would not be going to waste!!! Cudos for a great show pal Whoever you are !

depending on state/local laws he MIGHT be going to jail! the deer wasn't dead till he used his Knife, right? This makes him a poacher in many states. ???

Indeed, but it seems when someone is that crazy they often don't get caught, I would be interested in hearing.

Isn't that the way, throw a guy in jail cause he didn't let a deer suffer for a week before it starved to death or was unable to escape a coyote that would start eating it before it was dead.  I cannot believe that the founding fathers planned to ignore common sense.

Sounds like a real man to me.  Hope the meat was good and nothing untoward ruptured in the accident.

I've seen it done here in Alabama. A man hit a huge 10 pointer, but it didn't run off, just kinda flew thru the air. He retrieves the deer, takes it home and cleans it.. He called the local Game warden and was told that it was ok to do so. I suspect there's a small revenge factor brewing there, what with the damage to the car and all... ;D

The car that hit it kept going so I do not know how badly it was damaged.
The deer however was severly injured and I do see this as an act of mercy..
An act of mercy that was rewarded with some nice tenderloin Biscuits !!!

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the commonwealth owns the deer and the state must give permission for the person to take the deer from the roadway.  There is actually a form to do this!

I helped with an accident situation in the Richmond area one night.  A car hit a deer.  A second car came upon the badly injured deer.  The driver straddled the deer and cut its throat with his pocketknife to end its misery.  We waited for the police to come with the form granting ownership.  Then, we placed the dead deer in the fellow's trunk.  He was one happy camper.

I hit one a few years ago and threw it in the back of the truck, but I did not chase the deer down.  It was a mid-sized doe, and my front bumper nailed her square in the head.  It was in the middle of deer season, so I didn't want the meat going to waste!

Many of these laws were to prevent poaching.  While working with Texas Game and Fish back in the early 60s there were a group of people in the South Texas area that would use an old junk vehicle to hit deer on purpose so they could take the meat.  Even at that time it was against the law, we must have arrested a dozen or more for killing deer with a vehicle, usually a truck with a heavy brush guard type bumper.  After a while, they got smart, would have one vehicle hit the deer, and a second one would stop and pick it up.  This was also against the law.  It is the same today, the dead deer along the side of the road belongs to the State of Texas, and there are no provisions for an act of mercy.  However, if reported to the Game and Fish people in a timely manner, someone will come out and dispose of the deer and transport it for processing, the meat is then given to some organization that can use it such as the food bank, Salvation Army, etc.  This does not happen very often due to the size of the state, the number of wardens available, and the fact that most accidents of this nature are not reported unless someone is injuried. Most often, the animal is left for the coyotes and vultures.

While I admit it is a waste of meat, it does prevent the crooks from taking game illegally, and there are a bunch of folks that would do just that, given the opportunity.

sounds like you all have the right edea.
here in michigan if you report the accident (which is a really good idea for the insurance) the police will always give you permission to take the deer.  they don't want it laying by the road any more than anyone else.  if it is injured enough that you can catch and dispatch it with a knife they sure don't want it suffering either.

The only way a man is going to catch a deer on foot is if the deer is seriously injured. I have seen 3 legged deer move very fast. Anyone that complains about this guy finishing off a wounded animal needs to learn something about common sense and priorities.

I hit and killed a nice 7 point in downtown Apex.  Called a friend and we hung it dressed it and ate it.  One small blood spot where 2 ribs got broke.  Seems when it got hit the skull cap gpt broke in two and half went into the brain and killed him instantly.

Some years ago when my stepdad still worked for CSX rr they hit one with a train . the deer was not killed but had its jaw broken and one antler snapped off , we called the local game warden and when he arrived , he said he would not put the deer down because the next day was the opening of gun season and someone would shoot it .

At this point we were both pissed  but there was not much we could do with him there , we left for about 1/2 hour then returned after the warden had gone , i shot the poor beast and and dressed it out .

The next morning it was still were we had hung it in a small tree , i put my tag on it and boy was it good eating .

How ever i did loose all respect for that game warden and have not spoken to him sense .

I hit a big Doe in Maryland about 5 years ago.  My Toyota Tundra was still drive-able so the Trooper and I loaded it in the back and I continued on to Pennsylvania.  He gave me a non-game tag to put on it to show it was legal but not taken by hunting.  Never thought I would get my deer before I got to Pennsylvania.  Obviously I had not intended to use the truck either.  A little over $3,500 damage to the truck.  It was the largest deer checked in by the party who processed my meat in Pennsylvania that year.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts.  And we are never.  Ever the same.   Authur unknown.  In memory of my son Jonathan.
